  5. Comparing Solving Equations to Real Life Situations! • Be FAIR!!! • My brother got more. Not fair or equal. • Scales –one side is heavier, both sides don’t weigh the same.

  6. What Skills Do I Need To Know? • What does opposite mean: (+/-) (x/÷) • +, -, x, and ÷ Integers

  7. The Addition Property of Equality • Get X by itself X = 7 ________________ = 2 Or X = 2 + 5 • Do the opposite • The opposite of + 5 is - 5 - 5 - 5 X + 0 X + 0 is…X

  8. Another Example… -6 = y _______________ 2 = Or 2 = y • Get X by itself - 8 • Do the opposite • The opposite of -8 is +8 +8 +8 y + 0 Y + 0 is ….y

  9. The Multiplication Property of Equality • Get x by itself - 12 x = 72 ______ -12 _____ -12 The opposite of multiplying is dividing X = - 6 • -12 ÷ -12 = 1 (you are left with only 1x) • 72 ÷ -12 = - 6

  10. Try Again… Y = 11 • Get x by itself • (y is being divided by -8)…so multiply - 8 y = 11 -8 (-8) (-8) Multiply both sides of the equation by -8 You get….. Because… the -8’s cancel out and leave 1y or just y 11 times -8 is -88 Y = -88 and

  11. Using Both Properties! • Get x by itself • Get rid of the +6 by subtracting • Get rid of the -5 by dividing - 5 X + 6 = -16 - 6 - 6 ____________________________ - 5 x = - 22 - 5 - 5 You are left with… x = +22 5
