  2. Marriage • The legal approval of age for marriage is 18, but girls of 15 to 18 can get married with an approval from one parent. • Town Hall (2 witnesses or more ) • Both partners apply one month prior • Lived in the city/town there for 40 days

  3. En concubinage • Living together without legally married. • 40 to 50% of married couple had cohabited at least for two years. • French laws distinguishes between partners living together ‘unofficially’ ( en union libre) and ‘officially’ ( en concubinage). • It is easy for a couple to get a certificate from town hall certifying that they live together. • The major disadvantage of concubinage is that it isn’t recognized under French inheritance laws, so partners can inherit only the amount allowed to non-relatives, but they receive no pension from the state when their partners dies.

Religious Marriage • French marry in the Cathedrals, mainly catholic. • Couple take religious classes • Marriage is a sacrament(Catholic) • A sacrament is only given once • Thus, catholic don’t believe in divorce. • Also, there many marriages in in different Christians churches such as protestants and Pentecostals churches.

  6. Family Together • Traditionally, French family was much of an extended family. • Today, extended families are more common in rural areas while urban areas have created nuclear families. • Most married couples in France have two to three children.

  7. Family Income • Many married couples have double incomes. • On average, French families have less income than U.S.A families. • Government provide daycare. • Government provide Medicare. for all • French work less hours. • Easy Family life.

  8. Family Responsibilities • Parents are responsible for their children • French full time worker works 35 hours • Give time parents to raise children • Help children in school works • Children helps in the house works

  9. Single Families • Single family is common in France now • 40% of children are born out of wedlock and fifth are raised by single parent(85 women). • Illegitimacy no longer carry weight like it once did, all children have equal rights. • Mere celebetaire: is paid a generous wage by the state.

  10. Babies and Mothers • Longer maternity leave • By laws, all employer give employees nine months maternity leaves. • Mothers regain their energy • Longer Leaves increased babies • Longer leaves reduces a woman anxiety of having a baby.

  11. Family Vacation • By law, a month paid off • Family travel • Stay home • Others visit their extended • It was discovered that many French men cheat to their wives during this vacation period.

  12. Divorce in France • Very few divorce before 1950s • Divorced increase from 1972 • No fault divorce laws in 1970s (dropping the requirement that the spouse wishing to divorce proves adultery or other serious faults). • Implementation of No Fault Divorce laws increased divorce rate by 4/1000.

  13. Divorce impacts • Children feel not loved enough. • Broken homes causes broken future children ( two parents raise children better). • Economic problems(two income is better for a family). • Physical and psychological well being for partners .

  14. Popular Divorce in France • Nicolas Sarkozy, divorced his wife Cécilia Attias and married Carla Bruni . • Divorced his Cecilia, Oct 15, 07 • Divorce Marie-Dominique Culioli , 1996. • Second president to marry in office.

  15. Divorce and future • Children from divorced are likely to divorce too • Sarkozy’s father married three times • Like his father President Sarkozy had already married three times. • President should be discouraged • from divorcing because they are looked upon as examples.

Family very important • A family place to learn how to love and care about others. • Married couples should solve their problems or seek marriage counseling. • People who are not committed to one another shouldn’t have babies. • U.S.A first family, a good example for any family. • On CNN interview, First Lady Michelle Obama said; they go through problems like any other couple. However, they solve them together
