  1. It is the most horrifying dream for any corporate film maker to shoot in low light conditions. It becomes an alarming situation even for experts to get best footage in such bad lighting conditions. We have to understand that we can’t have sufficient light wherever we shoot. Here are a few things that you need to consider before you shoot under low light conditions.

  2. Scheduling a pre-shoot Visit/Recce is always beneficial Even though it may spend some small chunks of money, but scheduling a pre-shoot recce can do wonders. Not only you can know their facility very well, but also understand exact situation . Through this way, you can inspect the shooting site & its lighting requirements.

  3. Add some natural light As soon as you realize there is insufficient light, move towards each window or door present at the shooting location and open it. By that, I mean to unlock every source of natural light that can fill the location to get a better video. Use reflectors to bounce the light on your subject

  4. Lower the Aperture Yes, lower the f-stop to the minimum you have in your camera, f-stop 2 is good but f-stop 1.4 is even better. The wide open aperture will let the more light enter into the camera and will turn the poor light condition into a manageable one.

  5. Adjust the shutter speed At a shutter speed of 1/2 you can capture 8 times more light than at a shutter speed of 1/16th. But, if you will use a very low slow shutter speed from 1/2 to 1/30 to compensate for the low lighting, any motion – camera movement or action in the frame will look blurry. However, to avoid motion or blurriness keep the shutter speed between 1/30 to 1/50 seconds.

  6. Increase the video gain, ISO This should be the last option to improve your lighting condition. At a higher ISO your camera will always produce more noise (grain) than at a lower ISO.

  7. USE Prime lens During a low light shoot, one’s limited to a shutter speed of 1/30 sec with a typical zoom without increasing ISO. However, a prime lens with aperture f/1.4 will enable a much faster shutter speed of 1/250 sec.

  8. If you have already shot your video on a higher ISO, you will certainly have noise in the footage. But, the good thing is, you may reduce the video noise to an extent during editing stage with the help of filters and plug-ins. Buy a suitable noise reduction plug-in for your video editing software, run it on your footage and then you’ll possibly observe some enhancements.
