This report analyzes the current state of English Language Arts (ELA) instruction at DLSD, focusing on students in grades 7-9. Out of 1,045 students, 29% are economically disadvantaged, and significant gaps exist in achievement, particularly among IEP students. Recommendations include aligning the ELA curriculum with Common Core Standards, enhancing professional development for teachers, and promoting differentiated instruction to foster college and career readiness. Strategies for collaboration between grade levels and consultations with experts are also proposed to evolve teaching practices.

Professional Development to Date 2012 • Opening day – review of PSSA data, AYP status • In service 1 – district capital campaign, Google docs training • In service 2 – 45 minute presentation for all teachers regarding Common Core, 2.5 hours for teachers to work by grade level/dept on aligning one unit to Common Core • Scheduled In service 3 – Moodle, Google docs
Recommendations 1. Clarify the philosophy, goals, and objectives at the district, building, and grade levels with regards to promoting student progress toward College and Career readiness • Revisit district’s mission, vision, belief statements • Consult evidence based research on College and Career readiness and Common Core Standards • All students will have access to differentiated instruction. Enrichment and intervention will be provided in a systematic manner.
Recommendations 2. Align the English/Language Arts curriculum to the Common Core Standards -All teachers have access to ongoing education and training regarding the Common Core -The ELA curriculum will include standards for Reading, Writing, Speaking & Listening, and Language -All ELA teachers will have opportunities to collaborate throughout the year to develop a common language and practice while aligning curriculum
Recommendations 3. Enlist internal experts and external consultants to frame professional development for the English/Language Arts department -Eighth grade ELA teachers will assist seventh grade ELA teachers with curriculum assignment and pedagogical shift -An external consultant will serve as a coach assisting ELA teachers in their evolution to learning-centered Common Core aligned classrooms. -Consultant and internal experts will collaborate to develop a 2-3 year framework for ELA PD
