  2. Habitat • Emperor penguins live in Antarctica. • They do not have a shelter or home. • The emperor penguin is the largest penguin.

  3. Appearance • Emperor penguins are birds. • They are black, white and have a little bit of yellow. • They can reach 4 ft tall and can weigh between 22 kg. to 45 kg. • They are called male and female.

  4. Food • Emperor penguins eat squid , shrimp, and schools of fish. • They eat food in the water. • They chase after their prey, then snap them up with their beaks. • They usually eat in the fall, also in the winter. • They eat during the day.

  5. Young • A baby is called a chick. • Emperor penguins have one baby a year. • Emperor penguins babies are born in August or September. • To survive the cold, the father penguin warms the chick in his brood patch, while the mother finds food.

  6. Danger, Danger • The emperor penguin’s enemies are sharks, killer whales, and leopard seals. • The emperor penguin can’t really defend itself.

  7. Communication and Relatives • Emperor penguins has a trumpet sound voice. • King penguins and Rockhopper penguins are the emperor penguin’s relatives.

  8. Interesting Facts • Emperor penguins don’t make nests. • They can swim eight or nine miles per hour. • Emperor penguins would not make a good pet because you have to get one in the arctic, and they might get scared. • Then the chicks may not hatch properly.
