13. The X Project is an undertaking in South Africa to bring the X back from extinction and reintroduce it back into its habitat. The project began, when in 1955, Lutz Heck suggested that careful selected breeding, of a similar species, called the Plains Zebra could recreate the X. However, the project could get underway only in 1980, when it was proved that the X was a subspecies of the Plains Zebra. During March 1987, nine zebras were selected and captured at the Etosha National Park in Namibia. On 24 April1987 these zebras were brought to the specially constructed breeding camp complex at the Nature Conservation farm "Vrolijkheid", near Robertson, South Africa.
