Moreno Elementary Development and Implementation of a Campus PARENT ROOM Competency 001 The Principal knows how to shape campus culture by facilitating the development, articulation, implementation, and stewardship of a vision of learning that is shared and supported by the school community.

  2. Abstract ** Parent Room The purpose of the Parent Room Project is to strengthen the collaboration between teachers and parents. Our campus vision states: Moreno Elementary is the gateway to provide every individual the opportunity to compete and succeed in our global society. In order to achieve the vision we must join forces with parents and allow them to enter our school and be a part of the team that will help lead our students to be successful learners. By establishing a parent room for parent’s to work in to support teachers with preparation for school programs, projects, and classroom needs; they will help us in our goal to provide a world class education to all who enter our doors.

  3. Evidence of Need ** Parent Room “The need for educational change is as apparent as the fact that our world is continuously changing – changing at an ever increasing rate. Changes in U.S. demographics, culture, environment, science, technology, and economy mean that our schools must change if they are to prepare students to be successful and contributing members of society and if society is going to offer all of its citizens life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” (Glickman, 2010, p. 408). Why is there a need for this Project? The following were surveyed and their responses were heard LOUD and CLEAR. Teachers Parents Students Administration We need help with: → Preparing and coordinating school wide projects assigned to each grade level → Making resources for the classroom (to use in workstations and small group instruction) → Posting student work during planning time → Sorting and organizing student work packets Having parents on campus will mean: → there is more adult supervision → they can help with making our class data walls/folders, great work bulletin boards,.. We need their support in: → Working on organization of large school orders (books..) → School wide based events We want to have: → better communication with teachers and administration → a room where we can work on teacher requests, student, nurse, and office needs,.. → a place to store parent resources → a place for parents to register to become VIPS (Volunteers in Public Schools) and to check their child’s progress online

  6. Needs Assessment Survey The district survey is completely confidential. The 40-question survey will be used to determine how effectively we’ve progressed toward district goals and to better understand the needs of our schools. Survey results are also used to guide future initiatives. Your Voice is a chance for HISD stakeholders to make a difference in the education of Houston’s children. Moreno Elementary utilized the results from two surveys which both communicated the need of developing an effective parent room. District developed Survey: Your Voice Campus based Survey

  20. SCHEDULE Teachers will submit work to parent room on days assigned. Teachers will use a Request form to specify the work needed.   22. Course Competencies Addressed Competency 7 The principal knows how to apply organizational, decision-making, and problem-solving skills to ensure an effective learning environment. Competency 1 The principal knows how to shape campus culture by facilitating the development, articulation, implementation, and stewardship of a vision of learning that is shared and supported by the school community. Competency 9 The principal knows how to apply principles of leadership and management to the campus physical plant and support systems to ensure a safe and effective learning environment. Competency 8 The principal knows how to apply principles of effective leadership and management in relation to campus budgeting, personnel, resource utilization, financial management, and technology use.

  23. FORMATIVE FEEDBACK A comment box was placed in the Parent Room and the suggestions were reviewed weekly. SUMMATIVE FEEDBACK The District developed Survey (Your Voice) will be administered in May 2014 and the Campus based survey will be re-administered in May to see if the following sections had better results as a result of the PARENT ROOM.
