Diabetes: A metabolic disease • Diabetes mellitus (DM) is characterized by high blood sugar aka glucose (hyperglycaemia) • The metabolic control mechanism is regulated by the hormone insulin, which induces liver, muscle, and fat cells to absorb glucose • Type I DM is a total failure of insulin production, requiring insulin injection (~10% of DM) • Type II DM is a failure of insulin response due to insulin resistance or insufficient insulin production (~90% of DM)

Complications of Diabetes • Related Diseases (Metabolic Syndrome) • Obesity (by BMI or excess waist circumference) • Increased blood triglycerides and cholesterol • Raised blood pressure • Complications • Heart disease – heart attack and stroke • Kidney disease • Eye disease (blindness) • Nerve Damage • Erectile Dysfunction • Depression

Prevalence of Diabetes in Canada • 9 million Canadians suffer from some form of diabetes (about 1 in 3) • Incidence of type 2 is increasing rapidly due to: aging population, obesity, increasingly sedentary lifestyles • Life expectancy for people with type 2 diabetes may be shortened by 5 to 10 years.   5. Cost of Diabetes • People with diabetes incur medical costs that are two to three times higher than those without diabetes. A person with diabetes can face direct costs for medication and supplies ranging from $1,000 to $15,000 a year. • By 2020, it’s estimated that diabetes will cost the Canadian healthcare system $16.9 billion a year.
