  1. How to answer the Credit2008‘Option Question’

  2. In your answer you must have a clearstructure which uses relevant and appropriatesource material to answer this question well.

  3. What is the question? Option evaluating questions will ask you to pick one of two options or choices and then give 3 detailed reasons why you made that choice. [3 x 2 = 6 marks] They will also ask you why you rejected the other option and to give 2 detailed reasons why you did. [2 x 2 = 4 marks]

  4. You might get a question like the next one. There is a lot to do but be calm and think. Do not try it at the moment.

  5. How should you tackle this question?

  6. First of all ….. Do not be fooled by the question. You can look at all the information, compare the options and decide on one BUT

  7. Just pick ONE You can just pick one of the choices or options and do it. Both will have enough information for your choice to be correct.

  8. Just Pick One Party Candidate [2008] Kirsty Reid OR Robbie McKay

  9. Highlighters Use a GREEN highlighter to highlight the correct information that supports your choice. Use a RED highlighter to highlight the wronginformation that rejects the one you did not choose.

  10. Linking Remember to link any sources to the information you are given. This information may be written, statistics or graphs. You can draw lines on your question paper between your highlighted bits and the correct information to help you do this.

  11. Linking Kirsty Reid … I support the quarry it gives 150 jobs … Kirsty says …. which links to the info on Gleninch which says …. making her my choice.

  12. How you should tackle this question. • Work on the ‘reasons to support’ first. • Work on the ‘reasons to reject’ second. • ‘Prove what you say’ with detailedinformation and statistics from the sources.

  13. Make sure your answer is ‘in detail’.

  14. In detail • Each reason will be worth 2 marks. • You must give at least 2 different pieces of written information, statistics, information from a table, graph, map for each reason for a really good answer. • This is ‘in detail’. • Write each reason as a separate paragraph so the marker can easily mark what you have done. •  3 x 2 [support] = 6 marks •  2 x 2 [reject] = 4 marks • Overall 10 out of 10.

  15. Now try the question.

  16. Remember just pick Kirsty. Look at each part of her speech in turn and work out if it is correct or wrong. First of all look at what Kirsty says about the Wind Farm. Now compare what she says about the Wind Farm to the information about the Wind Farm in the ‘Background Information about Gleninch’. Is she correct or wrong?

  17. Wrong Wrong Do not be fooled by the question. You cannot use Kirsty Reid wanting the Wind Farm to support her as she is wrong in what she says.

  18. Now look at what Kirsty says about Education. Compare what she says about Education to the information on Education in the ‘Background Information about Gleninch’. Is she correct or wrong?

  19. Correct Correct You were not fooled by the question. You can use Kirsty Reid wanting education to support her as she is correct in what she says.

  20. Now write your answer about Kirsty and Education. I would pick Kirsty Reid as she says she would work to continue the good education found in Gleninch. She is correct as the statistics on Gleninch show that they produce 33% less school leavers with no qualifications. They also produce 13% more School Leavers with Highers than Scotland. A well written answer with detailed information and statistics well worth 2 marks. Well done.

  21. Now look at what Kirsty says about Women MPs. Compare what she says about Women MPs to the information on Women MPs in the ‘Background Information about Gleninch’. Is she correct or wrong?

  22. Wrong Do not be fooled by the question. You cannot use Kirsty Reid wanting more women MPs to support her as she is wrong in what she says.

  23. Now look at what Kirsty says about jobs and the new quarry. Compare what she says about jobs and the new quarry to the information on jobs and the new quarry in the ‘Background Information about Gleninch’. Is she correct or wrong?

  24. Correct Correct Correct You were not fooled by the question. You can use Kirsty Reid wanting the new quarry for jobs to support her as she is correct in what she says.

  25. Now write your answer about Kirsty and jobs and the new quarry. Kirsty says she would work to allow the new quarry to go ahead and create jobs. She is correct as the written information on Gleninch says that the unemployment rate is well above the national average. She is correct as the statistics on Gleninch show that the unemployment rate in Gleninch is 13% more than Scotland's. She is correct as the written information on Gleninch says that many young people leave the area to look for jobs. She is correct as the written information about the quarry say that it will provide 150 new jobs, a lot of jobs in Gleninch. A well written answer with a lot of detailed information and statistics well worth 2 marks. Well done. [The quarry point about the jobs with 1 other correct point would be enough for the 2 marks]

  26. Now look at what Kirsty says about transport and tourists. Compare what she says about transport and tourists to the information on transport and tourists in the ‘Background Information about Gleninch’. Is she correct or wrong?

  27. Correct Correct You were not fooled by the question. You can use Kirsty Reid wanting to improve transport to support her as she is correct in what she says.

  28. Now write your answer about Kirsty and transport and tourists. Kirsty says she would work to allow the improve transport links to encourage even more tourists. She is correct as the written information on Gleninch says that tourism is very important to the local area.
