Mathematical Practices • Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them • Reason abstractly and quantitatively • Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others • Model with mathematics • Use appropriate tools strategically • Attend to precision • Look and make use of structure • Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

  3. Commonalities among Science, ELA and Math • Reasoning with evidence • Building arguments and critiquing the arguments of others • Participating in reasoning-oriented practices with others

  4. Teachers will have to help students • Externalize/express their thinking • Listen carefully to each other • Pay attention to data and argue for their positions with evidence • Understand the reasoning of others

Conceptual Shifts in the NGSS • K-12 Science education should reflect Nature of Science as it is practiced and experienced in the real world • The NGSS are student performance expectations-not curriculum • The science concepts build coherently from K-12 • The NGSS focus on deeper understanding of content as well as application of content • Science and Engineering are integrated in the NGSS from K-12 • The NGSS are designed to prepare students for college, career, and citizenship • The NGS and Common Core State Standards (ELA and Math) are aligned
