Characteristics of Adult Learners • Adult self-concept moves from dependency to being self-directed • An adult accumulates a growing reservoir of experience, which is a rich resource for learning • The readiness to learn is closely related to the adult’s social role
Characteristics of Adult Learners • Adult’s orientation to learning change from being subject-centered to more problem-centered and from future application of knowledge to immediacy of application • Adult’s motivation is more internally driven than external During the process of learning, adult needs to know why they need to learn something (Knowles 1980, Knowles and Associates 1984)
Adults need to be responsible for their decisions on education; involvement in the planning and evaluation of their instruction (Self Concept) Adults are most interested in learning subjects having immediate relevance to their work and/or personal lives (Readiness) Adult learning is problem-centered rather than content-oriented (Orientation) Experience (including error) provides the basis for learning activities (Foundation) Adults respond better to internal versus external motivators (Motivation) Adults need to know the reason for learning something (Need to Know) Questions? Facilitator Responsibilities(Helpful Hints) • Be prepared before the training • Anticipate problems • Check the temperature • Dress appropriately • Plan on arriving AT LEAST on hour early BEFORE THE TRAINING BEGINS
