  2. Current Situation of the State • Minnesota added 8,500 jobs in June, up from May’s gain of 7,200 • Annual growth rate finally matches national growth of 1.9% • State unemployment rate fell to 4.5% in June, driven by a decline in a decreased labor force participation rate (70.3%), -.2% • Local Government, Education and Health, and Trade and Transportation gained the most • Average workweek increased to all time high of 34.5 hours • St. Cloud continues to outpace every MSA in the state in terms of added employment (+2.8% OTY change)

  3. Kanabec has 3rd highest unemployment rate • Mille Lacs has 4th highest rate

  4. Available Labor Force

  5. EDR 7E Changes in unemployment rate driven by employment, not as much by labor force changes…

  6. Unlike recent changes in the states unemployment rate, EDR 7E rate changes are almost entirely dependent on fluctuations of employment. As the rate drops and labor force stays constant, employment increases. As rate drops and employment stays constant, labor force drops.

  7. State of MN Employment changes • The relationship between Employment and Unemployment is much less correlated at the state level. • With Employment holding steady the rate of unemployment is driven less by employment or unemployment but rather the changes in the labor force.

  8. Region 7E EDR 7E currently has about 6 unemployed persons per job opening.

  9. Employment levels have rebounded, but they are still -697 jobs short of the prerecession peak in 2007. While it represents only a 1.4% decrease the employment recovery has not been robust enough to erase the recession.

  10. What’s going on in your Region? • You probably know that Health Care is the largest industry in your area, but… • How many jobs in the 5 county area are in the health care and social assistance industry? • 9,770, a lot right? • How many total jobs are there in your region? • 46,228 across all employers, not including self employed. • That means that about 21% of all employment is happening in this industry.

  11. This is how the health care and social assistance industry hierarchy is laid out

  12. Employment is increasing in the region for the 5 largest industries.

  13. Employment in the Health Care industry • The subsector Hospitals is suppressed to protect the employers. • While there is 66% more employment in Nursing and Residential Care than Ambulatory Health Care there is only 52% of the firms.

  14. Employment in the Ambulatory industry is up 367 jobs, +17.3% • Nursing/Residential Care is down 203, -4.7% • Social Assistance is up 34, +2.7% • Wages are -14%, -.9%, and +2.8% respectively.

  15. Wage Changes • 6 of the health care sectors have higher wages than the average for all and 6 have lower than the average. • Notice the Offices of Physicians in RED

  16. Possible explanations include expanded hiring in lower paying assistant and admin positions. • Employment in this sector has increased 194%, average wages have decreased 31.2% from 07 - 13 • 27.6% of jobs in this industry are in office and admin support for Central Planning Area

  17. EDR 7E Occupational Employment Stats • The pay gap between the metro and 7E is less in medical occupations than it is for all occupations combined while the ratio of occupations in the health field is higher.

  18. Metro Pay difference • The pay gap between the metro and 7E is less in medical occupations than it is for all occupations combined • Median for all occupations is -20.3% lower • For healthcare practitioners and technical occupations the gap is less, -10.8% • For healthcare support occupations the gap is -14.2% • Some occupations pay much more in your region (chiropractors make almost $50k more per year!)

  19. Wage and Employment Total, All Industries Health Care and Social Assistance
