  5. Homeostasis • How organisms regulate their bodies so that internal conditions remain stable and relatively constant.

  6. Homeostasis: cellular level • The cell membrane allows materials to enter and leave the cell. – responsible for the cell maintaining homeostasis – an internal balance. • This happens in two main ways: passive transport and active transport.

  7. Cell membranes are complex, with proteins and other molecules embedded in them. Transport Protein

Passive Transport • Does not require ATP energy • Molecules move down the concentration gradient (from high concentration to low concentration) • Three types: • Diffusion – the movement of molecules across the cell membrane • Osmosis – the movement of water molecules across the cell membrane • Facilitated Diffusion – the movement of molecules through a membrane protein.
