  2. “First in Existence; First to Make a Difference” In December 1, 1865, a dream became a powerful reality. Shaw University became the first institution of higher learning founded in the South. First in existence was not enough for her. She was determined to be the first in many historical movements. In 1873, she left another footprint in the history books. She gave birth to Estey Hall, the first building ever constructed to educate African American women in the nation. Determined to take youth to a level of academic achievement in 1881, she gave birth to America’s first medical school for African Americans. Striving for excellence, Shaw University opened the first School of Law for African Americans. Refusing to be nothing less than the best, Shaw University was the first historical black college in North Carolina to be granted an “A” rating by the State Department of Public Instruction in 1923. Ready and willing to spread her greatness, Shaw University gave birth to Livingstone College, Fayetteville State University, North Carolina Central University, Elizabeth City State University, and North Carolina A & T State University. Shaw University transformed anxious students into educated leaders in society. Ella Baker, a Shaw graduate in 1927, created the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). SNCC emerged in 1960 from student meetings on our illustrious campus. It was one of the principle organizations of the Civil Rights Movement. SNCC also played a leading role in the 1963 March on Washington. In 2007, Shaw University students led and organized the Jena Six march downtown. 143 years later and Shaw is continuing to make a difference in the community! In 2005, Jacques Curtis set a new standard for Women's CIAA basketball. Backed by greatness and determined to achieve, Curtis modified Athletic history forever! His achievements made Shaw University the first HBCU to win four consecutive CIAA championships! If anyone asks the question, why did Shaw University choose “First in Existence; First to Make a Difference” as their 2008 Homecoming theme, we say, “Let the record speak for itself!” GO SHAW U! Ebony Johnson, Student Activities Coordinator The Shaw University Hall of Fame As a tribute to athletes, coaches and administrators who excelled in their efforts and contributions to make Shaw University a viable competitor in athletics, a committee under the direction of Dr. Lee Monroe was formulated. The first induction and banquet was held on November 8, 1975 and was labeled “The James E. Lytle Hall of Fame Dinner.” 2008 Athletic Hall of Fame Inductees Michelle Ponce Dolphin Softball Joy Gaston Gayles Softball William Hooker Coach David Lacy Basketball Tyron Reece Basketball Robert Tinnin Football George Williams Basketball 2008 Posthumous Inductees James Snow Basketball Henry Score Chapman Football Lester Roseboro Basketball Robert (Red) Lee Football William Lee Football Edward Roper Football John (Puggie) Williams Football William (Hoc-Sha) Wilder Football James Purnell Football The Shaw Family Salutes & Congratulates the Class of 2008 Inductees for your Excellence & Example.
