Medical Certification Requirements as Part of the CDL – Final Rule (Part 383.73) (12/01/2008) State compliance required by 01/30/2012 All CDL holders must begin complying by 01/30/2012 and no later than 01/30/2014 Drivers must self-certify whether they are subject to the Part 391 Physical requirements Drivers must furnish the original or a copy of the medical certificate to the State

Motor Carrier Requirements • Must place Driver’s MVR documenting the driver’s medical cert. status in the DQ file before allowing to drive a CMV (Part 383 def.) • Verify the driver’s self certification of non-excepted, interstate as “certified” • Verify that this driver has a “certified” medical examination status • Verify whether the driver was issued a medical variance by FMCSA • May no longer use a copy of the medical certificate as verification in the DQ file, except for up to 15 days from the date stamp on the receipt given to the driver by the State.

  3. Driver Requirements • Interstate CDL drivers subject to Part 391 (non-excepted) are responsible to: • Provide a medical examiner’s certificate to the state • May use the State’s date stamped copy as proof to the motor carrier • Starting February 1, 2014, will no longer be required to carry the medical certificate (except for carrying the receipt for the first 15 days).The license will be used to verify the driver’s medical qualification. • Must still carry any Skills Performance Evaluation (SPE) certificate or medical exemption document while on duty
