  4. Trends in ASD Child Count… Minnesota Schools 2013-2014

Most Recent Report from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) • Overall prevalence of ASDs in 8 yr olds: 1 in 68 • 1 in 42 boys and 1 in 189 girls • Almost five times as many boys • Children were diagnosed at earlier ages (3-4 yrs) • Largest increases among Hispanic and Black children but still underrepresented compared to Non-Hispanic white children • Source: http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/ss6302a1.htm

New: DSM 5Autism Spectrum Disorders Impairments across two domains: • Social Communication (this was 2 domains: social interaction and communication in DSMIV) • Restricted and Repetitive Behaviors ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Severity Level (identified for Both Domain 1 and Domain 2)

  9. How to get the NEW ASD License Traditional Path – go through an ASD teacher license program at one of seven approved universities Transition Process Path – currently hold a special education teaching license and document your training and experience in ASD and apply for an ASD license

  12. More about the Transition Process Path… • You must currently hold a special education teaching license • Be able to document training and experience in ASD prior to July 2012 • Provide documentation and rationale to meet all of the standards

  13. ASD Licenses as of April 2014 • Total number of submitted eligibility packets approved= 712 • Total number of ASD Licenses issued • = 581 • ASD licenses issued through the “Eligibility Review” process = 550 • ASD licenses issued through a teacher preparation program= 31

  14. ASD License Distribution by age • 34 are issued for the full Birth through Grade 12 (age 21) scope • 466 are issued for to Kindergarten through Grade 12 (age 21) • 50 are for to Birth through age 6 only

Submission windows for the Eligibility Review document and supporting materials through Spring 2015:  Submission deadlineNotification by June 1, 2014 August 31, 2014 September 1, 2014 November 30, 2014 December 1, 2014 February 28, 2015 Final initial submission date March 1, 2015 Final resubmission date June 30, 2015

  16. Helpful Hints • Make sure you have all the documentation • Make sure you follow directions • Make sure the Page 11 clearly describes how the event COMPLETELY addresses the standard you are using it for. • More is not better, Clear and Direct are better.

  17. Helpful Hints Continued • Technology (Standards B4 and C3) is a new requirement for ALL teaching licenses as of 2012. The focus of these standards is on “knowledge of systems to support the selection, acquisition and use, and strategies to implement, monitor and adjust the use of AT vs. knowledge of devices.” *See attachment for free on line training available to meet these standards.
