  12. Commercial advertising? “Placing ads on the social networking website Facebook is one of the best opportunities on the Internet for targeted advertising. Because Facebook users provide information about their age, gender, location and interests, you can target your ads directly to the demographic you want to reach.” • Yes, you can advertise on Facebook! • Yes, it is very expensive ! • Usual advertise on Facebook costs around $ 10 000 per day. • If you want to advertise on Facebook, you first have to tell them, how much you can afford for advertise, and then they will tell you, the way that they can offer you.

  13. Commercial advertising?7 ways to advertise. • Facebook Pages-free! If you want to immerse yourself on Facebook, the first and most important step is to set up a Facebook page. Facebook pages represent local businesses, products, brands, companies, artists, bands, public figures, and more. Facebook Ads: • Sponsored story is a sponsored ad with title, body copy, and image that appears in the user's news feed on the home page, and may link to a Facebook page or an external Web site. It's effective because it offers accurate targeting options based on real profile data. • Sponsored social story is relevant only for advertisers with a Facebook page as the sponsored social story directs to that Facebook Page. It's an ad featuring a Facebook user, the action taken, and the brand/product name when the action is taken on the Facebook page

  14. Video sponsored story is basically a click-to-play video that plays within the ad, and may link to a Facebook page or an external Web site. Like the two ad types above, the video sponsored story appears on the news feed and offers the same benefits. • Box ad unit is a box ad unit with title, body copy, and image that appears in the left-hand side (in the old Facebook format) or right-hand side (in the new Facebook format). This ad unit may link to a Facebook page or an external Web site. • Display ads, leaderboards, and skyscrapers are also available on Facebook, and are bought through the MSN Ad Center. Display ads offer more flexibility with creatives since the advertiser will not be limited by character count or body copy. Gift Sponsorships "Gifts" is actually a Facebook application that lets users send and receive virtual gifts. New gifts are added everyday; most gifts cost $1 but some are free for users. "Gifting" is a very popular Facebook activity. Once a user receives a gift, the gift is seen on the recipient's user profile.

  15. How it is successful and how much has it grown? • It is successful, because it’s international, and because the most of the people like it. Facebook is a global social network society, and helps to people all around the world to communicate, to share, and to have fun together, no matter where they are. • There’s no doubt that Facebook is growing at a breathtaking pace. A year ago, according to Comscore, they had just 74 000 000 unique monthly visitors and 35 000 000 000 page views. Today those numbers have grown by 118% and 74%, respectively, to 161 000 000 unique visitors and 61 000 000 000 page views per month. • The company is likely spending well over a $1 000 000per month on electricity alone, say experts we’ve spoken with. Bandwidth is likely another $500,000 or more per month on top of that. The company has earmarked $100 million to buy 50,000 servers this year and next. And sources say they’ve been buying one NetApp 3070 storage system per week just to keep up with all this user generated content. At up to $2 million each, that adds up quickly - we’ve heard estimates that they may have spent as much as $30 000 000 this year alone with the company. And the icing on the cake - earmark another $15 000 000per year in office and datacenter rent payments. • And don’t forget those human assets. With 750 employees and growing, Facebook is spending at least another $10 000 000per month on payroll.

  16. Criticisms of Facebook • Facebook has met with some controversy over the past few years: • In October 2005, the University of New Mexico blocked access to Facebook from its campus computers and networks. It cited a violation of the university's Acceptable Use Policy for abusing computer resources as the reason, stating the website forces use of the university's credentials for activity not related to the university. • On January 1, 2008, a memorial group on Facebook posted the identity of murdered Toronto teenager Stefanie Rengel, whose family had not yet given the Toronto Police Service their consent to release her name to the media, as well as the identities of her accused killers — despite the fact that under Canada's Youth Criminal Justice Act, it is illegal to publish the name of an underage criminal. • On February 5, 2008, Fouad Mourtada, a citizen of Morocco, was arrested for the alleged creation of a faked Facebook profile of Prince Moulay Rachid of Morocco. • Due to the open nature of Facebook, several countries have banned access to it including Syria and Iran. The Syrian government cited the ban was on the premise that the website promoted attacks on authorities. The government also feared Israeli infiltration of Syrian social networks on Facebook. Facebook was also used by Syrian citizens to criticize the government, and public criticism of the Syrian government is punishable by imprisonment. In Iran, the website was banned because of fears that opposition movements were being organized on the website.
