  6. Exercise 1 • YOUR BRAND • In Pairs, 2 minutes each • 3 words to describe you if I stopped a friend in the street • 3 words that a teacher, lecturer or employer would use to describe you • Now write one or two sentences that defines your brand

  7. THE CV • Structure • Language • What to include • Contact details • Profile/Skills Summary • Education & Qualifications • Employment History/Work Experience • Gaps: what to do? • Interests & References

  8. Exercise 2 • TRANSFERABLE SKILLS • In Pairs, 2 minutes each • Choose one role you have had either as work experience, employment, charitable, socially or at home • Describe role to your partner • Brainstorm how you will present it: Main responsibilities, key achievements

  9. THE CV • HOW TO ENHANCE IT: • Include recent and relevant roles • Begin sentences with action (“buzz”) words • Demonstrate top 5 employability skills • Remember “C A R”! • Key words • Use spell check – but do not “relay” on it! • Constantly update

  10. THE CV • WHAT NOT TO DO! • Include the word “I” – ANYWHERE! • Re-write job descriptions • Include reasons for leaving • Attempt to hide gaps • Include criticisms or negativity • Lie

  11. Exercise 3 • WRITE YOUR OWN CV • Just: • Personal Profile • Work Experience • Skills/Qualifications and/or Interests

  12. ADAPTING YOUR CV • Put yourself in the shoes of the employer • What do they want to know? • What qualifications, skills and experience are required for the job? • What have you done that matches these? • Look for key words and use them.

  13. Exercise 4 • 3 minutes • Adapt/change your CV so that it is suitable for the following role: • Sales Assistant required for well known retail store. Must be personable, well presented, have excellent communication skills, hard working and willing to learn. Commission paid for any sales made above set targets.

  14. COVERING LETTERS • First impression • An opportunity to: • Stand out • Say what can’t be said in the CV • Elaborate on YOU • Link your skills to the company and the role

  15. THE LETTER • Must stand out • Research name • Quick tip • 3 paragraphs covering 3 points: • Introduction – position/situation/how fulfil criteria • Reference to the company • Closing words – lasting impression and how skills/qualities will add value • Signing off
