  1. Written responses (Later Essays too)

  2. The Prompt • Determine what you are being asked. • Figure out your idea/ opinion and write it in one sentence. THIS IS YOUR THESIS for the paragraph and later the essay.

  3. The proof • Figure out what evidence/ proof you have in the text. • Use the best pieces in the paragraph/ essay. • Remember- every piece of evidence has to be explained.

  4. Wrap it up • Don’t forget to tie up all loose ends in the paragraph or essay with a good conclusion. • In a paragraph, simply draw the readers attention to what you were trying to prove to them. • In an essay it is similar except you have a whole paragraph to lead the reader to a final thought on the topic (your THESIS).

  5. The Prompt-- • Tituba, Abigail, and Betty name people whom they claim accompanied the Devil. Explain why these three declare they saw certain people with the Devil. Then describe what circumstances motivate them to name specific individuals. Support your reasons with at least two references to Act One.

  6. So What do we need to answer???

  9. The Prompt-- • Tituba, Abigail, and Betty name people whom they claim accompanied the Devil. Explain why these three declare they saw certain people with the Devil. Then describe what circumstances motivate them to name specific individuals. Support your reasons with at least two references to Act One.

  10. OK—in summary– Take 2 • Why they named names? • Why they named THOSE names? • What motivated them to do this? • Use AT LEAST 2 quotes to prove my ideas.

  11. ThESIS • At the end of Act One of the Crucible, Tituba, Abigail, and Betty name specific people who they saw with the Devil for selfish reasons.

  12. Proof/ Explain it • The girls broke many of the Puritan rules when they danced in the woods. They knew that punishments ranged from whipping to death. Abigail says to her uncle, “..we did dance..I’ll be whipped if I must be. But they’re speakin’ of witchcraft.” She was willing to take a whipping rather than to be hanged. Betty and Ruth were avoiding trouble by being “unconscious” and “unawake”. If someone else can be blamed for their actions, then they will escape punishment.

  13. More Proof/ explanation • Once Abigail named Tituba, no one was questioning her further. Once Tituba realizes that she will die if she doesn’t confess and give them names, she openly states that she was bewitched and gives them the names that they want. When Abigail sees the two ministers actually being nice to Tituba and rewarding her, “You are God’s instrument put into our hands to discover the Devil’s agents among us…”, she knows that identifying others can benefit her as well. It will take all the blame off the girls if “witches” were responsible for all their bad behavior.

  14. Even More Proof • The names that they start with are the two names that Mrs. Putnam had already said. She is a wealthy and respected member of the society and has had considerable power in all the discussions so far. By throwing out the two names she said, they will hopefully gain her support that they are innocents.

  15. Betty joined in with Abigail and Tituba, most likely to also avoid trouble. She also may have joined in after Abby because Abby threatened her with death if she didn’t go along with her story earlier in the Act.

  16. The Conclusion • Tituba, Abigail, and Betty all accuse others of witchcraft for their own personal gain.
