Africa) took control of Southern Spain • *Christians from Northern Spain began the Reconquistato push the Moors our of Spain • Lasts until all of Spain is reclaimed • *Christopher Columbus voyages to Americas for the first time • *Spain explorations make them RICH, and the world’s greatest POWER • *When colonies declare independence Spain’s power fades

  3. Spain History *1930’s- • Spain remained a neutral power in WWI • *Civil War over monarchy or republic government • *Francisco Franco of the Fascist party won control and ruled as a dictator for almost 40 years.

  8. *Portugal History *How does Portuguese exploration bring wealth? • *Because of coastal location the Portuguese became skilled sailors, navigator, and shipbuilders • Prince Henry sponsored many expeditions to help their country build an empire. • *Over seas colonies brought lots of wealth to Portugal. Asian spice trade, and resources from Africa and South American. • *Portugal lost power when their biggest resource, Brazil declared independence

  13. Running with the Bulls Background • The running with the Bulls takes place each day of the Fiesta at 8:00 A.M. The length of the run is about half mile and usually last about three minutes—unless one or more of the bulls get loose. The six bulls selected can weigh more than 1,300 pounds and are bred for the purpose of fighting. They are smart, fast, and aggressive, and unpredictable. Since record-keeping began in 1924, 13 deaths and hundreds of serious injuries have resulted from the Running of the Bulls. • Question: Why might some people object to the Running of the Bulls?
