  2. Criminal Profiling Learning Target: Students can infer the modus operandi and signature behavior of a criminal and construct a criminal profile.

  3. Definition: a series of investigative techniques used to determine the characteristics of an unknown criminal offender • AKA: Offender Profiling Criminal Profiling

  4. Input: acquire and organize crime scene evidence • Decision Process: search for patterns in evidence • Crime Assessment: reconstruct crime to determine motivation • Criminal Profile Formation: build a profile using info gathered • Investigation: police investigators use profile, profile adjusted if new evidence is uncovered • Apprehension: verify profile accuracy Criminal Profiling Method

Serial Crime: Crime committed repetitively by the same offender(s) • Modus Operandi (M.O.): “Method of operation”: how the offender completes the crime and escapes uncaptured. • Specific to each criminal • Tends to change and be perfected over time • Signature behavior: fulfills emotional/psychological need • Closely connected to motivation Criminal Profiling – Serial Criminals

  6. The terms Modus Operandi and Signature are often confused and misused because they both describe actions that are unique to an individual serial criminal. Describe the difference between M.O. and Signature. Short Essay Question
