  24. Quantum computing More than a billion times faster than today’s computers. However, not a replacement for current computers. Silicon chip with four qubits Superconducting Qubits Qubits use Superposition and Entanglement Qubits are very instable, working at -273 C°  error correction is a big problem IBM is the world leader in this technology TED Quantum Primer

  25. First working quantum computer is closer to reality IBM scientists recently made important advancements with error detection and circuit design – steps toward realization of practical quantum computer. IBM Q announced October 2017 open APIs and Simulator for 56 Qubits. • Potential uses: • Pharmaceutical Research • Materials Discovery • Artificial Intelligence • Weather and Earthquake science • Cryptoanalysis • Cloud Security http://research.ibm.com/ibm-q/ Quantum-Computing described in 5 levels

  26. Current Cryptography Exposure • Quantum Computing will expose several crypto protocols • SSL, HTTPS, AES, DSA, RSA, etc. • large keys that needed 100s years to be cracked, might be cracked • in a few seconds • Solution is Lattice-based encryption • based on Fully Homomorphic Encryption • can be plugged into TLS and IKE Quantum-safe-cryptography

  27. Fully Homomorphic Encryption • Fully homomorphic encryption is a privacy enabling technology • Allows encrypted user data to be processed without the server knowing the content • Results returned to authorized user for decryption • Privacy-enhanced cloud services Craig Gentry, a 35-year-old IBM researcher, solved this 30-year cryptographic problem 2010 ACM Distinguished Dissertation Award 2010 Best Paper Award – IACR Crypto 2010 Privacy Enhancing Technology Award 2009 Privacy Innovation Award from the Intl. Association of Privacy Professionals 29

  28. Ray Kurzweil Predictions • Most of the predictions are based on exponential growth of technology (doubles approx. every year) • 10 iteration: 1000x, 20 iteration: 1 mio fold • Cell phones in comparison to MIT computer (in 1965) are today • 1000 times more processing power • 1 mio times smaller • 1 mio times cheaper • 1 bio times increase in price/performance • Compute power that was 40 years ago in a building, is currently in a cell phone, will be in 10 years at the size of a red blood cell

  29. Ray Kurzweil Predictions 2017 2010’s: Glasses will beam images directly onto the retina. Computers have same processing power as human brains. 2020’s: Most diseases will go away (with the help of nanobots). Computers communicate as humans and pass Turing test. 2030’s: Brain is reverse engineered. Copy of the brain/knowledge can be stored. Virtual reality will become more exciting than reality. 2040’s: Nanotech foglets will create any object in physical world. Non-biological intelligence grows exponentially. Human beings will be a billion times more capable. 2045´s: Linking wirelessly neocortex to neocortex in the cloud For more information visit: http://www.kurzweilai.net
