  1. OLA Super-Conference 2007 • Session #1421 • Title: PUT A BLOG ON THE FIRE AND LIGHT THAT WIKI! • Presenter: Anita Brooks Kirkland (Library Consultant, Information Technology Services, Waterloo Region District School Board)

  2. Overview • This was an overview session for educators and instructors who have not had time to explore some of the new internet technologies and tools that have the potential to profoundly change the learning landscape as we know it today.

  3. Focus • The session, while somewhat elementary, focused on Wiki’s, Blogs and Podcasting. • My primary interest in attending this session was to observe how high school teachers are using these technologies in their course material.

  4. Since students are entering the university at a young age I wanted to know how teachers where using Wikipedia and other resources as instruction tools in their classrooms. What I found was that teachers are taking the same approach that academic librarians are taking. Wikipedia is not allowed to be cited in secondary school bibliographies apparently, but it is used as a ‘getting started’ resource.

  5. Conclusion • I found that teachers believe Wikipedia is a great platform for educating students about what makes a good resource, bias, and poor resource selection. • Overall it seems that, while new web 2.0 technologies are still not quite understood among teachers, there is progress being made to integrate these technologies into students assignments and scholastic life.
