  4. April 1, 2019 • Do Now: What do you think happens to the growing (what will be a) baby during the “9” months? • Obj: LWDAT discuss what happens during fertilization and pregnancy to labor and delivery

  5. Female Reproductive System Function Matures and stores the female sex cell: ova/ovum (egg) Allows fertilization to occur Nourish and protect the fertilized egg until it is ready to live outside the body

Parts Ovary: area that stores the ova until it’s fully developed Fallopian tubes: egg is released from ovary to uterus through tubes Uterus (womb): hollow pear shaped organ that lies between 2 ovaries Normally about 3 inches long & stretches when baby grows (18-20in. long, 6-10lbs.) Shelters & nourishes the fetus Endometrium: lining of the uterus

  7. Parts (con’t) Cervix: lower end of the uterus that connects to the vagina Vagina: muscular passageway from the uterus to the outside of the body Hymen: a ring of tissue inside the opening of the vagina

  8. Problems w/ female system • Infertility: unable to get pregnant • Ovarian cysts: growths on ovary • STD • Cancer

Fertilization Fertilization is the joining together of the female ova and the male sperm After fertilization occurs a protective coating forms around the egg to prevent other sperm from entering Twins Identical: 1 fertilized egg splits into 2 complete fertilized eggs Fraternal: 2 separate eggs are fertilized at the same time

Development After fertilization the cell attaches itself to the wall of the uterus Cells begins to divide (embryo) Cells in the embryo continue to divide & eventually join to make tissues, organs and systems After about 2 months (8 weeks) the developing baby is called a fetus Development of baby After about 9 months : baby is ready to be born

Growth inside uterus Fetus gets food from a thick, rich lining of tissue that builds up along the walls of the uterus and connects the mother to the baby called the placenta Placenta also gives the baby oxygen to breathe Umbilical cord: food & oxygen reach the baby through a cord that grows out of the placenta Waste from the baby travels through the cord and into mother’s bloodstream Becomes the baby navel

Development before birth End of 1st month: About 1/4 inch long Heart, brain & lungs are forming Heart begins to beat End of 2nd month: About 1 inch long Skin & other organs are developing End of 4th/5th month: Gender can be determined Movement can be felt End of 9th month: Weighs 6-9 pounds 18-21 inches long Body organs developed enough to function on their own

Stages of Labor 1st stage: (latent & active phases) Longest part (last several hours) Latent phase Cervix starts to dilate (open)  fully dilated cervix is 10 centimeters Cervix dilates from 0-5cm Contractions get stronger as time passes Mild contractions begin at 15-20 minutes apart & last 60-90 seconds Contractions become more regular until they are 5 minutes apart

  16. Stages of Labor 1st stage: Active phase Cervix dilates from 5-8 cm Contractions get stronger & are about 3 minutes apart, lasting about 45 seconds Amniotic membrane ruptures (water breaks) Cervix dilates from 8-10 cm (fully dilated) Contractions are 2-3 minutes apart and last about 1 minute

Stages of Labor 2nd stage (Delivery) About 2 hours or longer Contractions 2-5 minutes apart & last from about 60-90 seconds Push the baby out until it is born Episiotomy: small incision is made between the vagina & the anus to enlarge the vaginal opening Baby’s mouth & nose are suctioned with a small bulb syringe to remove any fluid Umbilical cord will be cut

  18. Stages of Labor 3rd stage: (after birth) After the baby is born the placenta separates from the wall of the uterus and is passed through the vagina: after birth Shortest stage of labor Few minutes – 20 minutes

  20. Apgar Score Tests the newborn’s initial condition and response to any resuscitative effort Performed at one min and then 5 minutes of life 7-10: are good to excellent condition 4-6: may require some help breathing Under 4: requires immediate life saving measures
