What is a resource? • The resources they were looking for were probably natural resources. 7. Who was Sir Walter Raleigh? • Raleigh was a wealthy friend of the Queen of England, who gave him permission to start a colony in North America. • Twice he tried to start a colony in North Carolina, but failed.

  8. Why did Raleigh’s first colony fail? • The colonist did not plant enough crops to support the colony. • The Indians nearby got tired of providing the colonist with food. • The colonist began to starve and a ship from England picked up the survivors.

  9. What happened to the second colony? • England became involved in a war with Spain and sent no ships to check on the colony for 3 years. • When ships finally did arrive, there was no sign of life in the colony. • The only clue was the word “CROATOAN” carved into a tree.
