By Jennifer Conner • You will need: • Social Studies text book • Paper • Pencil • Art supplies • Social Studies interactive notebook • Turn to page 155 • Read “Why We Remember” to yourself.

  2. Reflect on “Why We Remember”. • On a sheet of paper, make a personal connection to the text. • Tell me what this paragraph made you think about. Why is what we are about to learn important? • It is the very beginning of the country in which we live with many luxuries and freedoms. • This is one reason we celebrate Thanksgiving every year.

  3. Read pages 156 – 157 Why did the English & Spanish want colonies in America? • To find gold and other natural resources. What is a resource? • The resources they were looking for were probably natural resources. A natural resource is a material source of wealth, such as timber (or wood), fresh water, or a mineral deposit that occurs in a natural state and has economic value. • It is not man made, but can be used for food, to build with, and trade or sell.

  4. Why was Sir Walter Raleigh a good choice as the organizer of the first English Colony in North America? • He had explored North America in the early 1580’s, so…

  5. How did war between England and Spain affect the fate of the Roanoke Island Settlement? • England needed all of its ships for the war, so John White could not return with a shipload of supplies until about 3 years later.

  7. Who was Sir Walter Raleigh? • Raleigh was a wealthy friend of the Queen of England, who gave him permission to start a colony in North America. • Twice he tried to start a colony in North Carolina, but failed.

  8. Why did Raleigh’s first colony fail? • The colonist did not plant enough crops to support the colony. • The Indians nearby got tired of providing the colonist with food. • The colonist began to starve and a ship from England picked up the survivors.

  9. What happened to the second colony? • England became involved in a war with Spain and sent no ships to check on the colony for 3 years. • When ships finally did arrive, there was no sign of life in the colony. • The only clue was the word “CROATOAN” carved into a tree.
