  2. Listen to me read this word. While I am reading, play close attention to which syllable is receiving the stress. ocean o/cean Did you notice that the first syllable receives the stress? The vowel sound in the final syllable is neither long nor short. This sound is called the schwa.

While I am reading, play close attention to which syllable is receiving the stress. mo/tion motion Did you notice that in this word, too, the first syllable receives the stress? Notice that both ocean and motion have the schwa sound /әn/, but it is spelled differently in each word.
