Sand Paintings were used by medicine men to ward off evil spirits.
The person for whom the sand painting was created sat in the center of it to be purified and rid of all evil.
A sandpainting was created at sunrise, then destroyed at sunset, after the medicine man cleansed the evil from the individual.
Many sandpaintings included “symbolism”….. Shapes that had meaning to the tribe.
Many sandpaintings were symmetrical, indicating the North, West, East and South.
