  1. Estonian experience in implementation and maintenance of statistical database using PX-Web Eda Fros Statistics Estonia UNECE Workshop on Developing Data Dissemination Systems 12 May 2008, Geneva, Switzerland

  2. Contents • Estonian public databases • Common principles • Why PC-Axis software? • User feedback • Some important aspects • Developments regarding databases • Short demonstration of databases UNECE Workshop on Developing Data Dissemination Systems, 12 May 2008

  3. Estonian public databases • Statistical Database • Contains official statistics, including official regionalstatisticscollected with official statistical surveys confirmed by theGovernment of theRepublic • Available since April 2001 • Regional Development Database • Contains regional official statistics and data received fromadministrativedata sources which have not been collected with official statistical surveys • Available since April 2002 UNECE Workshop on Developing Data Dissemination Systems, 12 May 2008

  4. Common principles • The statistical database is meant for all official statisticspublished by Statistics Estonia • All official statistics should be first disseminated in thestatistical database • In case a news release is issued, the data are published simultaneously in the news release and statistical database UNECE Workshop on Developing Data Dissemination Systems, 12 May 2008

  5. Common principles (2) • Statistics Estonia informs the users about the statistics being released in release calendar • Updates in databases are made public at 9.00 a.m. on the day announced in advance • Both databases can be accessed free of charge • All data are published in Estonian and English UNECE Workshop on Developing Data Dissemination Systems, 12 May 2008

  6. Why PC-Axis software (PX-Web)? • Use of PC-Axis main module since 1998 for presentation of tables on CD-ROM • Simple structure of PC-Axis file • PX-Web is easy to adapt and maintain • Good solution for the presentation of multidimensional tables • Use of the software in neighbouring countries • Existence of the PC-Axis reference group to influence further development of the product UNECE Workshop on Developing Data Dissemination Systems, 12 May 2008

  7. User feedback • Need for training courses • Need for instructions how to use databases • Need for promotion of databases • The most popular format for downloading is Excel table UNECE Workshop on Developing Data Dissemination Systems, 12 May 2008

  8. Some important aspects • Harmonisation over all subject areas • The structure of statistical indicator and the structure of database table (cube) • No hierarchical variables (every value of variable must be separately understandable) • Centrally managed databases to guarantee quality of databases UNECE Workshop on Developing Data Dissemination Systems, 12 May 2008

  9. Developments regarding databases • Presentation of statistical tables on CD • Release Calendar • Statistical table presentation standard • Automatic updating of predefined tables on the web • Archiving of database tables • Generation of the list of statistical indicators UNECE Workshop on Developing Data Dissemination Systems, 12 May 2008
