  15. What are the 3 Branches of Government? Legislative Judicial Executive

  16. LEGISLATIVE BRANCH The Legislative Branch is responsible for writing laws, or legislation. We call the legislative branch Congress. They meet at Capitol Hill.

  17. EXECUTIVE BRANCH • The Executive Branch enacts the laws. • It is the job of this branch to make sure that laws are being followed by citizens. • This branch is housed in the White House.

JUDICIAL BRANCH • The Judicial Branch explains the meaning of the laws. • The Judicial Branch is referred to as the Supreme Court. • While the Legislative Branch creates laws and the Executive Branch carries them out, the Judicial Branch evaluates the fairness of the laws. In other words, they judge.

  19. Checks and Balances • This system was created so that no one part of the government would have too much power. • The following is an example- • The Congress passes a law that would raise everyone’s income taxes by 5%. The President then vetoes this law.

  20. Levels of Government NATIONAL • The Federal Government oversees legislation that affects the entire country. This level is lead by the President. • EX: Makes currency (or money) • State governments work on legislation that affects people in that particular state. This level is lead by the Governor. • EX: Sets up school districts. • Local laws and forms of government are determined by a town or county, and affect that particular geographical area. This level is lead by the Mayor. • EX: Hold local elections and build county roads. STATE LOCAL

  21. Steps for responsible decision making when voting. • Listen to the candidates speak • Ask questions • Talk to your friends and find out what they know about the candidates • Decide who to vote for…..your vote counts!!! One vote can swing an election in favor of a candidate.
