  2. Momentum, Mass, and Velocity • Momentum (p): the product of the mass and velocity of an object • The more momentum an object has the harder it is to stop or change its direction

  3. Calculating Momentum • Momentum: Mass of an object multiplied by its velocity • P=M X V • Unit: kg*m/s

  4. Law Conservation of Momentum • States that when any time objects collide, the total amount of momentum stays the same • When a moving object hits another object, some or all of the momentum of the first is transferred

Practice Problems • Find the momentum of the different balls m= .045 kg m=.168 kg m= .575 kg V= 16 m/s upward v=3 m/s forward v= 9.2 m/s east • At a rodeo, a bucking bronco throws an 81 kg rider into the air at a velocity of 10 m/s upward. What is the riders momentum? • What is the velocity of a 55 kg skater who has a momentum of 440 kg×m/s forward?
