Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory ASO Internal Safety Review System • Triennial Safety Review codified in institutional procedure concurred to by LBNL Radiation Safety Committee (RSC) and maintained by Radiation Protection Group in LBNL EH&S • Review may be modular or a single process • Accelerator program division (e.g. ALS) is responsible for developing the plan, suggesting team members (internal and external) and presenting this to the RCM & RSC for approval • Institutional sub-committee of RSC established to ensure review meets ASO requirements
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory ASO Internal Safety Review System • Accelerator program division conducts the review and documents any findings • A corrective action plan is developed to close any findings • CAP reviewed and ultimately approved by institutional committee • RCM may restrict accelerator operations based on results of review • Continued renewal of accelerator authorization to operate (RWA) contingent on completion of triennial safety review
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory ASO Internal Safety Review System • LBNL ASO assurance procedure developed in 2007 – currently in revision • All safety reviews to-date have been integrated into periodic review of accelerator RWAs or internal to accelerator program divisions in areas outside purview of RWA (e.g. SSQA) • Currently developing 420.2B-compliant SADs • DOE approval of 88” Cyclotron SAD/ASE expected September 2009 • First triennial safety review to LBNL ASO assurance procedure – September 2012 (?)
