  1. Progress in the first year of NORS De Mazière Martine, Hocke Klemens, Richter Andreas, Godin-Beekmann Sophie, Henne Stephan, Blumenstock Thomas, Niemeijer Sander, Mahieu Emmanuel and participating teams and SC members

  2. Connections with GAS, ESA, NDACC, WMO/GAW The composition of the Steering Committee is as follows: • the Project Management Team (coordinator and WP leaders); • representative of MACC-II: R. Engelen • a representative of ESA for the GECA environment: T. Fehr/B. Bojkov; • a representative of EEA for the coordination of the in-situ component in the GMES Atmosphere area: H. Steen-Andersen • G. Braathen (WMO), as co-chairman for NDACC; • O. Tarasova, responsible at WMO for matters related to Greenhouse gases, Reactive gases, GAW stations and QA/QC; • J.C. Lambert, as representative of CEOS WGCV

  3. Reminder about NORS • EU FP7 project • Start: Nov. 1, 2011 • Duration: 33 months • Objective: • Toperform the required research and developments for optimizing the NDACC data for the purpose of supporting the quality assessments of the future GMES Atmospheric Service (GAS  MACC-II ) • To develop and implement a Web-based Validation Server of the MACC-II (GAS) products using the NORS data products

  4. Demonstration Capacity building

  5. NORS data products & techniques • Target NORS data products • tropospheric and stratospheric ozone columns and vertical profiles up to 70 km altitude • tropospheric and stratospheric NO2 columns and profiles • lower tropospheric profiles of NO2, HCHO, aerosol extinction • tropospheric and stratospheric columns of CO • tropospheric and stratospheric columns of CH4 • 4 NDACC observation techniques + in-situ surface monitoring: Lidar, MicroWave, FTIR, UV-VIS DOAS + in-situ surface monitoring

  6. Progress (1/2) • NORS data willbe HDF formatted, accordingto GEOMS guidelines (http://avdc.nasa.gsfc.gov/GEOMS) and NDACC instruments templates (tobefixedasap) • Rapid data delivery system is set up: AllNORS data willbesubmittedwithin 1 monthafteracquisitionto ‘NRT’ section of NDACC database (ftp://ftp.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/ndacc/NRT/) ** • Data access is public • Information about the NORS project and results is available on the NORS Webpage: http://nors.aeronomie.be

  7. Progress (2/2): integrated products • WP6:development of a methodology for integrating ground-based data sources to provide consistent ozone vertical distribution time series as well as tropospheric and stratospheric ozone columns at the 4 NDACC stations (NyAlesund, Alpine station (OHP), Izaña, La Réunion) • 1st steps: At Alpine station (OHP, Jungfraujochand Bern): • evaluation of validity ranges for different data sources (DIAL, FTIR, microwave); • comparisons of monthlymeanprofilestoidentifyandunderstandbiases • Next steps: Look at individualprofilesandairmassvariations • WP5: startedwork on integration of surface in-situ, gb remote-sensingandsatellite data

  8. NORS Validation Server (NVS) • Goal: Web-based server for validation of GAS products using NORS data products • System implementation: currently ongoing at S&T • System delivery: medio 2013, deployed at BIRA • WP progress/deliverables since NORS Kick-off: • May 2012: User Requirements Document • July 2012: Server Design Document NORS partners workcloselytogetherwith the MACC-II consortium, and in particularwith the MACC-II VAL project

  9. NVS User Requirements • Identification of NORS user categories: • MACC-II data originators, MACC-II VAL subproject, NORS (NDACC) data providers,MACC-II users • Description of desired NORS products and MACC-II models • Description of intercomparison validation chain and its parameters • Description of server outputs (statistics, plots, data) • Definition of use cases: • Default = incremental, data-driven processing of products and generation of server outputs for fixed sets of parameter settings • Interactive = user provides custom parameter settings, triggering full report generation • VIP = user providing own model and/or NDACC data streams for custom report

  10. NVS Design

  11. NVS Design (cont.) • Server back-end retrieves model data from MACC, NORS data from NDACC; extracts and maintains metadata catalog • Arrival of new products triggers incremental validation process that generates database of intermediate results and outputs • Core validation chain algorithms built on top of an expanded GECA intercomparison set of command-line tools • Includes tools for NO2 diurnal correction (under development) and effective airmass calculations (already available for FTIR observations) • And others in future…. • Server provides web application front-end that supports all use cases: user can browse outputs, generate default reports, request custom reports

  12. NVS Summary • NVS will serve default users by generating automatically daily validation reports • NVS will serve other users in interactive mode • NVS will address the MACC-II products corresponding to the NORS target products, from the different MACC-II model outputs • The validation chain tools will be improved gradually. • NVS has been designed such as to enable expansion to more NDACC stations, more NDACC products, more model outputs. • NVS will be linked to MACC-II (and NDACC ?) Webpages

  13. NORS near- future • To start soon: • Minor revision of UV/VIS GEOMS templates (forincludingquality indicators relatedtocloudy scenes) • Fixing the LIDAR templates • Data User documentation • NDACC – TCCON (mid-IR versus near-IR) Cross-calibration of CO • bettercharacterisation of NORS data uncertainties Cf. ISSI Workshop on DIAL uncertainties Cf. Joint IRWG/NORS Workshop in Feb. 2013 • First progressand review meeting at BIRA, on Nov. 20-21

  14. Acknowledgements:This project has received funding from the European Community’s 7th Framework Programme (2007-2013) under grant agreement 284421

  15. ** Discussion • ‘NRT’  ‘RD’ or ‘Preliminary’ • DATA_QUALITY or DATA_CAVEATS

  16. Some GEOMS issues GEOMS Metadata Board revived: ESA and NILU, NASA AVDC, NDACC DHF, Ian Boyd, S&T, NORS coord. • Workingon ‘mapping’ between GEOMS & netCDF-CF • Workingon verifying compliance with ISO and INSPIRE standards • EVDC ESA Earth ObservationValidation Data Center • willbe made GEOMS compliant • Will bemaintainedfor TROPOMI andSentinels • willbesynchronisedwith AVDC for GEOMS guidelines • Work in different WGs on uncertaintyreportingtobestimulated
