  2. Writing Expectations: • Includedtext types: opinion, informative, and narrative • Participate in sharedresearch and writingprojects • Follow all stages of the writingprocess: prewriting, draft, revising, editing, and publishedproduct

  3. What do we look for? • 1 sample of each must be collected each quarter • 1 of those will be graded for conventions • Technology must be used on one of these by the end of the year.

  4. On Grade Level: • Students must score a 3 on each writing standard to be considered on-grade level.

  5. Text Types and Purposes • W.1.1 – Opinion –topic, state opinion, tell why, closure • W.1.2 – Informative – topic, facts, closure • W.1.3 – Narratives – 2+ sequenced events, details, sequence words, closure

  6. Production Standards • W.1.5 – Writing Process • W.1.6 - Technology

  7. Research Standards • W.1.7 – Shared research and writing projects • W.1.8 – Recall and gather information

  8. Language and Conventions • L.1.1 and L.1.2 – Examples: • Upper and lower-case letters • Capitalize dates and names • End punctuation

  9. Ways to help at home: • Provide a place for your child to write. • Read, Read, Read • Journaling • Authentic writing opportunities • Keep a vocabulary notebook • Ask questions • Be a writing role model

  10. Reading • Middle of the Year Reading Expectation: Level G • End of the Year Reading Expectation: Level J or above • Students should be reading and comprehending both fiction and non-fiction texts.

  11. Fluency • Fluency is: • Accuracy- reading the words right • Rate- not too fast and not too slow • Punctuation- use the punctuation when reading • Expression- don’t sound like a robot and read smoothly. • Incorporated into daily Smiles and Guided Reading Time

  12. Written Comprehension • After reading text: must be able to comprehend both orally and in written form. • Question Prompts- handout that will be sent home in the future • Practice at home with homework books!

  13. Math • We have been and will continue using the math series Investigations • No hopping around- sequenced from beginning to end • Builds and grows as the year progresses

  14. How We Build • Using games that repeat and gradually get harder • Examples- Compare, Double Compare, Start With/Get to, Roll and Record addition/subtraction, Guess my rule • Class Discussions and Assessments
