  2. Islam in the Middle Ages • Muslim: Someone who practices the monotheistic faith of Islam (submission to Allah).

  4. Islam in the Middle Ages • Mohammed: The founder of Islam, this “final prophet” lived between 570-632 CE.

  5. Islam in the Middle Ages • Pilgrimage: A journey or search of moral or spiritual significance. Every able bodied Muslim should take part in the Hajj, and travel to Mecca during their lifetime.

  6. Islam in the Middle Ages • Mecca: Located in Saudi Arabia, Mecca is the birthplace of Mohammed and the holiest city in Islam.

  7. Islam in the Middle Ages • Moors: Medieval Islamic people who lived in Morocco, Algeria, and the Iberian peninsula (Spain).

  8. Islam in the Middle Ages • Ottoman Empire: Established in 1300 CE, this powerful Turkish empire had many achievements including defeating Byzantium. It lasted until the end of the First World War in 1918.

  9. Talk to the Text • While you read the section on the rise of Islam, write three questions or comments about the text in the margins or spaces between the paragraphs.
