  2. Vocabulary • Criminal Laws: Brought by the government against a person charged with committing a crime • Felonies: Criminal offense where punishment is more than a year in prison(murder, robbery) • Misdemeanors: Criminal offense that is less serious than a felony(minor theft, simple assault)

  3. Vocabulary 2 • Civil Laws: regulate relations with individuals or groups of individuals • Civil Action: Lawsuit that is brought by a person who feels harmed by other • Defendant: person accused of committing the crime • Plaintiff: Case brought up by…the person or company harmed

Role of the Judicial Branch • What is the reasoning behind “limited gov’t?” • What is the purpose of “separation of powers?” • What is the purpose of “checks and balances?” • **Judicial Review: Courts’ power to declare any law passed by Congress unconstitutional • When can a law be considered unconstitutional? • When the Constitution does not give the power gov’t the power to pass the law • When the law violates rights Court can strike down a decision by the executive branch- pardon

  6. Federalism • Power is shared between state and federal government (another name for the fed gov’t?) Most civil and criminal laws are passed by the state government!

  7. Bill of Rights • Guarantees the fundamental rights and liberties of all Americans
