Why Think Safety? • The total number of fraud complaints for SD in 2002 = 377 - 116 (31%) were internet actions (source: Federal Trade Commission) • There are over 1.6 billion Web Sites, of these, an estimated 12.8 millionare pornographic* • There are over 17,000 Web Sites devoted to child pornography or pedophilia* • According to police estimates, as many as 80,000 child pornography files are traded on-line every week* • Over 25 million children currently log on to the Internet* *(Source: SD ICAC)

Predators are everywhere, and the Internet is a perfect tool for them to meet your child or loved one Kids communicate and get information from the Internet in a variety of ways including: e-mail; bulletin boards (newsgroups), instant messaging systems, chat rooms and video conferencing Danger Zone!

TIPS FOR FAMILIES Keeping Out of Danger • Spend Time On-line Together • Monitor-Monitor-Monitor = Put the Computer Somewhere Visible • Establish Rules and Stick to Them • Remind NOT to Give Out Personal Information • Know Your Child’s Friends • Guard Passwords • Discourage Posting of Family Photos • Use Filter Software • Be Honest with Kids About the Dangers • Report Anything Suspicious

Swimming Through the Spam Be Your Own Lifeguard • SPAM = JUNK MAIL • Unsolicited • Contains advertising for product or service TIPS: • Don’t Reply – Even with the word “remove” • Never sign up with sites promising to remove your name from Spam lists • Stay anonymous • Don’t open email from unknown sources • Be careful with business card information

  12. Reminders for Parents • Talk with Your Children About What They Can and Cannot Do Online • Be reasonable and set reasonable expectations. Remember what it was like when you were their age. • Be Open with Your Children and Encourage Them to Come to You if They Encounter a Problem Online • If they tell you about someone or something they encountered, your first response should not be to blame them or take away their Internet privileges. Work with them to help them avoid problems in the future. • Learn Everything You Can About the Internet • Ask your child to show you what's cool. Have them show you great places for kids or teens and fill you in on areas that you might benefit from as well.
