Why did We Choose This? • Because we’re nerds.
Why we really chose this • It is a fun game • It requires creativity • We enjoy it • People share what they enjoy
LEARNING OBJECTIVES • Students will: • Be able to play and understand the game • Know the history of the game • Know a few of the jobs related to the game
First of all… • Dungeons and Dragons is played mostly verbally or using boards and game pieces. • There is no single objective in Dungeons and Dragons- you “win” by gaining levels, completing quests, getting treasure, etc. • The game set in a world created and run by the “Dungeon Master”. • All successes and failures are based on the roll of the die.
A brief example • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gE6kLeUG87s • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqXqK3ZlqWI
Step 1 – Gather the Crew • Gather a group of 2-10 people, and select one Dungeon Master. • The Dungeon Master will run the game. • Yes, you do need to buy some stuff…
Step 2 – make a character • Create a character that fits with the game. • This process may seem confusing, but try to hang on- it’ll all make sense eventually. • Be creative! • Race/Class • Ability scores • Defenses • Items • Attacks • Etc…
RACES • Human • Dwarf • Elf • Half-Elf • Half-Orc • Gnome • Halfling • Dragonborn
CLASSES • Cleric • Bard • Fighter • Paladin • Wizard • Rogue • Sorcerer • Warlock • Ranger
Step 3 – begin your adventure • What is your goal? Do you have one? • Anything you could do in real life, you can attempt to do in the game. • Roll the 20 sided dice, and try to get a high number. • Add your modifiers!
Step 4 - battle • Fighting can either take place purely verbally, on a board of some kind, or somewhere in between. • Turns are taken, and each turn you have the chance to take several actions, such as moving, attacking, and shifting. • Use your basic and special attacks, and don’t be afraid to strategize.

April 7, 2009 • Break from war gaming • Individual characters • Smaller scale • 1977, Split into D&D and AD&D • 2000, D&D dropped, AD&D renamed • 1974, Published by Tactical Studies Rules Inc. • 1997, Wizards of the Coast

World Building for DM’s • The DM’s job is to create an alternate, believable world, filled with creatures and items. • Don’t plan all aspects out at once- make general statements about the world, to be filled in later. • Make it fun: fun is dangerous, and fantastical, with “story hooks”.
Use of Foes • All creatures in the game have their own powers, hit points, abilities, etc., like the players, found in the Monster Manual(s).
Making Dungeons • A classic part of Dungeons and Dragons. • In the sewers/aqueducts of a city • In ancient catacombs • In an active volcano. • In a dwarf mine • Etc… • Consider objectives. • What have the characters come to do? • Consider difficulty. • Is the Dungeon challenging? Too hard? • Consider atmosphere. • Is it suspenseful? Interesting?
