How it all started?...................... • Establishing the link. • Meetings between Stockport Council and Deqing Chen. • Emails sent to schools across Stockport. • 8 schools replied and these all eventually took part. • Link schools in Kaifeng found. • Meetings between Sue and Deqing and phone calls to China to make sure early communication was as good as possible. • When confident that links were robust, funding was applied for and given!

My part……… • Feb 2009, replied to an advert in the school bulletin re: a possible link with China. • Attended meeting with the other 8 participants of the link. • Established first contact with my link school via email. • Continued to strengthen link with regular emails. • Students at RVTC produced a book of their school and daily school life to send to China.

  4. Contact broke down in May 2009 due to link teacher having a baby!! • Meetings at the council became more regular (6 weekly) to discuss the possibility of a trip to China at Oct half term . • July 2009 a new link teacher contacted me and regular contact continued weekly. • Aug 2009, the visit to China was confirmed, visa’s sent off and only 8 weeks to go!! • Sept 2009 meeting with Richard French from the British Council to prepare us for expectations and practicalities of the visit.

  6. Check the weather before you depart Preparation for the visit Learn some of the basic words & phrases Have some business cards made up Prepare yourself for the fact that you may be teaching lessons…..don’t forget that ‘USB’ stick!! (like I did!!) Prepare some gifts to give to your school.

  7. ‘Gifts’ • Students- pencils, badges. • Exchange Teacher – i.e. gifts from your local area –books, chocolates etc • Head Teacher – memorabilia from your school, T-shirt, Sweatshirt/tie, badges, school flag, school DVD/prospectus/ newspaper.

  8. The school day (boarding school) • 5.30am rise and 20 mins of exercise • Lessons start at 7.30am (self study) • 8 X 40 mins lessons per day • 10.30am 20 mins of exercise • 12.30 lunch (2 hours) • 2-3 hours of homework per day! (self study) • 8.00pm finish • Wash & Bed My lessons

  9. Food and Drink • Superb hospitality • Lots of choice • Beware the rice wine! • Chopsticks....practise makes perfect! • Toasts! If you can, give everything a try!!! Meals prepared for you at school

  10. What now…..?? • Currently still emailing regularly to partner school. • Students have formed ‘pen pal’ relationships- emailing and writing letters. • 1 Week of assemblies to whole school. • Chinese Spectacular show organised for February 2010. • Hoping for future funding to set up Chinese work shops. • Chinese officials are visiting Stockport this month to reinforce links in both Business and Education.
