The major components in the teaching • of social work intervention: • The theory of intervention, e.g.: • Crisis Intervention (CI), • Cognitive-behavioural Intervention (CBI), • Structural Family Therapy, • Narrative Therapy , • Gender-sensitive/women-centred interventions • 2. The person, and • 3. The problem him/her is encountering

  4. The usual process of teaching • Theory + Practice (person + problems) • 2. Theory: • Classroom teaching – large lecture • Seminar – small group discussion • Practice: • Simulated situation – laboratory • Real life practice – practicum

The context of social work practice is becoming more and more complex Social work students, mostly are secondary school leavers, thus are not familiar with the complexity of the practice situation, i.e. the clients and their problem situation. Even though they will have opportunity to ‘practice’ during the two fieldwork placements, yet, they still need more assistance in enhancing their cognitive as well as affective understanding of their prospective clients and their problem situations. Real life case materials can contribute in this aspect

  7. Social WorkClients: • To capture the life situations of as • many clients as possible • Get them talk about their life and • problems encounter with their own • mouth and in their own words

  8. Social Workers’ response: • Worker’s understanding or • assessment/analysis of the • problem situation; • Worker’s planned intervention • Services rendered

  10. Recruitment problems: • Project staff – have to be a social • worker who knows about audio- • visual production – • VERY DIFFICULT! • Social welfare agencies • Social workers • Clients

  11. Actual production • Very time consuming • Work with production teams, a lot • of discussion and negotiation • Post-production work • Uploading the material on the web • Retrieving the material on the web

  12. Lessons learnt

It is a worthwhile endeavor as it can really enhances the effectiveness of teaching and learning as students find it more interesting and REAL when attempting to apply theory to practice situation It really TAKES up TIME to launch the production, though it is also very INTERESTING and CHALLENGING It is also very COSTLY, in terms of production cost and MY OWN TIME A RELIABLE and COMPETENT staff is a MUST!!
