The Chesapeake Watershed spans five states and has a rich geological history dating back to the supercontinent Pangaea, about 220 million years ago. The area once consisted of ancient lava beds and lacked the Chesapeake Bay or coastal regions. As mountain erosion occurred and sea levels dropped, the Coastal Plain emerged, made from sediments. A significant meteor impact near Newport News 35 million years ago led to the creation of the Chesapeake Bay through the influx of rivers and ocean waters into the depression formed by the impact.

The red shows the ancient lava beds. The lava bed in the East is from when the continental plates were pressing up against each other and creating the great mountains over 14,000 feet high. There was no Chesapeake Bay or even a Coastal Region.
