Data Center Upgrades • 4 new servers, each with 2 quad core processors, 36 Gigabyte Memory, two 146 Gigabyte Hard Drives, 2 Network Cards, and redundant power supplies • 2 hard drive Controllers each with twelve 600 Gigabyte hard drives for a total of 14.4 Terabytes • VMware vSphere software installed on servers • 1 backup hard drive controller with 16 Terabytes of storage for district wide backups • Symantec Backup Software installed • 2 new data center switches • 2 Network Managed Universal Power Supplies (UPS)
E-mail Transition from Novell GroupWise to Microsoft Live@edu E-mail in the Cloud Email + Calendar: Communication Tools: Collaboration Tools: • Migrated 1000 e-mail boxes from GroupWise to Live@Edu with Microsoft Exchange • Converted 2 years of E-mail data from each user over to the new system
Moved from Novell Network to Microsoft Network • Built a new Directory Structure for students, staff and administrators • Implemented new policies to lock down student stations • Consolidated 56 Novell school based servers to 10 virtual servers housed at the district office
Implemented a district-wide backup solution • Consolidated unreliable individual backup stations from each school to one robust district-wide backup solution • Restore Jobs are fast and straight forward and many teachers have already had opportunities to use this service.
Upgraded Anti-Virus on 3200 Computers District Wide • The Sophos Enterprise Console allows us to monitor the anti-virus status of all district computers. • The dashboard gives us an overall summary picture of the district computers at any given time. • From the console, we can update, scan, and cure viruses remotely.
Imaged 3200 student, staff and administrator computers district wide • Installed an open source Fog Imaging Server at the district office and 4 other sites • Backed up and restored existing data • Installed a clean computer image on each system in the district • Connected all workstations to the new Microsoft Network • Upgraded Microsoft Office to the 2010 version on all district workstations • Upgraded the anti-virus software to the newest version on all district workstations
Implemented new network print services • With the new print services, computers can automatically be connected to new network printers and copier without anyone manually touching the computer. • District went through major copy machine upgrade during the spring of 2012 in which about 15 school copiers were replaced with new Ricoh Network Copiers. • With the new print services, we were able to connect computers all over the district to the new copiers through configuration changes made at the district office without any manual intervention or disruption to end users. Implemented New Network Management Tools Intermapper • Intermapper is an interactive tool which continuously monitors the health of the network. • When Bandwidth utilization reaches the 50% threshold, the links turn yellow. • When there is a real problem the links turn red. • This allows us to resolve problems sometimes before the schools even know there is a problem.
IBOSS reporter • Monitor internet bandwidth utilization in real-time • Monitor web activity • Dashboard gives overall picture of areas of concern • Since the upgrade, we can set the filter policies based on groups • Teachers can have one set of restrictions and students can have more secure restrictions
Fog Image Server has Computer Inventory Tools • Each computer which has been imaged throughout the district shows up in the Fog Inventory Database. • Database maintains all pertinent data on each workstation including Jackson County asset Information as well as manufacture serial numbers. • Operating system, memory, and model types are also available.
Implemented Skeep VNC Remote Assist Software • Skeep is an open source utility program which allows us to provide remote assistance to any user in the district. • Both the user and the technician can work on the same desktop so the technician can see the issue and help the end user resolve the problems quickly.
New Web Based Help Desk System available for School Year 2012-2013 • All district employees will be able to submit help desk tickets for technology and facilities issues starting in the 2012-2013 school year. • Tickets will be monitored and tracked to make sure resolutions are completed in a timely manner. • Reports are available through the system to help manage the technical resources needed. • This system has been piloted by the MIS and Facilities departments over the past few months. • Technology coordinators have been trained on the system and are ready for the fall implementation.
Upgraded Transportation Software and Servers • Relocated servers from the Bus Garage facilities to the District Office Data Center. • Virtualized the transportation servers as part of the district data center. • Upgraded the Transportation VersaTrans servers from Windows server 2003 to Windows Server 2008. • Upgraded SQL to the latest version.
What’s next? • Remove old servers from school sites. • Use server parts to create a few large servers to be placed in the District Data Center. • Assist schools with old computer removal and new computer installations and imaging. • Implement a new E-mail archiving solution. • Upgrade Anti-Virus District wide to newly released version. • Continue to train on new Microsoft network and virtual environment. • Test Help Desk System with the Maintenance Department. • Work on E-rate plan to upgrade outdated School Retrofits.
