  3. Literal Language – You say exactly what you mean. You do not exaggerate. I’m really tired of being tossed around for the fun of it.

  4. Figurative Language – You DON’T say exactly what you mean. You compare and exaggerate. I’m so sick of being thrown around like a sling shot! I think I might explode!

  6. Simile Comparing two unlike things using the words “like” or “as.” Ms. Benson couldn’t see a thing. She was as blind as a bat! Her hair glistened in the rain like a nose hair after a sneeze

  7. Hyperbole! • AHUGEexaggeration! “I’m so hungry I could eat a horse!” NOOO!

  8. ALLITERATION • the repeating of the same letter or sound, especially consonant sounds….including tongue twisters Boil the butter and bring it by the bank Sally sells seashells by the seashore. Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.

  9. Metaphor • Comparing two unlike things NOT using “like” or “as” The clouds are soft cotton balls. Middle school is a zoo!

  10. Personification • Giving human characteristics to non-human things. My food loves to prance, to jump, to dance; I wait for the time, I wait for the chance! As mommy goes in and out of the room; tables and chairs become their ballroom! I flick my fingers; swing my wrist. Beans and turkey are doing the twist! Peas, plumbs, apples or mangos; on to the walls, they're doing the tango!

The hockey player lost his control when the puck ran across the the ice. • The snow on the hill was powdered sugar. • The coach was as upset as a lion when his team lost the game. • Freddy French fired five fabulous free throws. • The snowmobile was a rocket in the newly fallen snow. • The running shoes danced as the runner neared the finish line. • “Bang!” went the gun as the race started. • Steven boxes in the light-heavyweight division. • Spotlighting several special sports shows seems significant for TV. • After the marathon, the runner was thirsty enough to drink the ocean. • The golf ball walked gently into the ninth hole. • The team members remained as cool as cucumbers after the game.
