  1. GeoCaching Where Techno Geek & Nature Freak Collide

  2. What is GeoCaching? Geocaching is a mixture of high tech and the "great out-doors". It began when some friends in Oregon decided to hide a “cache” mark the coordinates with a GPS and then have their friends find the “cache”. The idea soon caught on as more and more people both hid caches and still more went out into the wilds of North America looking for these “hidden treasures”. Geocaching now is done in over 200 countries world wide to include forward locations such as Afghanistan and Iraq. (MWR approved caches)

  3. Caching in a nutshell GeoCaching is receiving coordinates to an “cache” a container with a log book and sometimes trade items. When you get in the area of this container, one will use logic and cunning to discover where the person has hidden this container. Once found, they will sign the log, trade items if they desire and then replace the “cache” as found.

  4. Types of Caches • Traditional Cache: Rubbermaid container or ammo can sized cache, with trade items. • Micro cache: this is a small cache consisting of a small container (such as a 35mm film canister) and a log book • Multi Cache – Cache with 2 or more containers with coordinates to the final location • Puzzle Cache – same as a Multi only now you must solve a puzzle to find the final cache. • Meet & Greet – A gathering of GeoCachers

  5. What is the Benefit • Location, Location Location Goecaching will take you to unknown areas and some spectacular views. • Out door exercise – most caches involve hiking and often times climbing or obstacles • Attention to Detail training. Many caches involve figuring out the persons camo technique. • Good times with friends – a challenge is always worth bringing friends along for. • For commanders, they can “set up cache competitions to create team work and get people out of the dorm.

  6. What do I need to start? • An internet connection so one can download waypoints (cache listings) • A GPSr (Global Positioning System Receiver) Though some people don’t use them to cache – they use the hints given and Google map. • An adventurous spirit.
