Landforms and Rivers • Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus cover about 12 percent of the world’s land area • Eurasia is the name given to this area • Russia is the world’s largest country by area • Ural Mountains divide the region • West (Ukraine and Belarus) Europe • East lies in Asia • Highest point in Europe • Mount Elbrus • Caucasus region suffers from severe earthquakes

Landforms and Rivers • Ukraine contains the Pripet Marshes • Largest swamp in Europe • Ural mountains are more like high rolling hills • Dnieper, Don, and Volga are three of the largest south-flowing rivers in the region • Lake Baikal, which is in Siberia, is the deepest lake in the world • 1/5 of the worlds fresh water

Climates and Vegetation • Much of the country lies in the humid continental, subarctic, and tundra climate regions • Permafrost is widespread and deep • Most of the rivers and water a frozen over • North contains tundra vegetation • South contains taiga • Farther south contains deciduous=coniferous forest

Natural Resources • Russia’s forest, energy, and mineral resources are among the richest in the world • Taiga provides wood for building products and paper pulp • Coal, hydroelectricity, natural gas, and oil are main energy resources • Contains pipelines carries fuel form Moscow • Russia and Ukraine have many large coal mines.
