  1. Patterns in life By Joanna Fellows & Euan Laurie

  2. Living things All living things have things in common, they all breathe, move, grow, eat, reproduce, get rid of waste and react to things that happen around them.

  3. Plants • Plants breathe by opening tiny holes in their leaves called stoma which let in the oxygen. • Plants do not move from place to place they move their leaves towards the light. • Most plants grow from seeds. Seeds are made when pollen grains join up with an ovule • Plants make their own food by using water and carbon dioxide from the air. • Plants react to light, their leaves follow the sun and some plants have flowers that open in the morning and close at night when it is dark. • Many plants keep waste in their leaves these drop off in autumn.

  4. Animals .All animals breathe air. .Animals move from place to place .Most animals come from eggs. .Animals eat plants or other animals .All animals get rid of waste which they have to do. .All animals react to things because they must be aware of what is happening around them.

  5. Cells • Living things are made up of cells, just like bricks make a house. • Plant cells are different from animal cells. They have different parts. • Both cells have a nucleus and a cell membrane.

  6. Kinds of cells • Blood cells carry oxygen around the body. • Guard cells open and close the stoma In leaves. • Nerve cells carry a message from one part of the body to the other. • Sperm cells swim to the female eggs and try and join up with them.

  7. Tissues The cells in our bodies do not work alone they work as part of a tissue. A tissue is made up of lots of cells of the same kind which work together. Organs are made up of lots of tissues

  8. Classification • All living things in the world can be split up into two groups, these can then be split up into smaller groups. • The two groups are plants and animals. • Animals are split up into vertebrates and invertebrates. • Plants are split into non-flowering and flowering. • Animal classification diagrams are similar to this one of plants.

  9. Variety • We share the earth with 1.5 million kinds of living things. • There are different varieties of all the living things. • E.g. not all cats are the same and not all roses are the same.

  10. Plant Organs • Plants have organs just like humans do. • They are fruit, leaf, flower, stem and the root.
