  7. Theodore: “I have a great affection for the Egyptian people. Perhaps that is because of the relations my Family (Jews) had with them. Instruction to the novices Nov.18.1859 • At a very early date, Father Theodore wanted to implant Sion in Alexandria on his way from Marseille to Jaffa, because there was a large Jewish community there. • The name of Alexandria is full of old memories. The Christianity founded by St. Mark in this great Egyptian city revelled in holiness the early church in Jerusalem. • He also wanted a special link to unite Egypt with the Holy Land. • He wrote to Sr. Luice Marx Meyer the Superior in Jerusalem who went to assume the responsibility of the new foundation: “You know, my sympathy for the happy country which sheltered the holy families, I do not think that any other country has produced so many saints.” Notre Dame de Sion

  8. Beginning in Alexandria • On April 25th 1880, at he feast of St. Mark a Sunday, Mère Lucie Marx Meyer and Sister Innocentia, accompanied by Father Zephyrin Biever, a friend of Father Mary Alphonse, arrived in Alexandria by ship. Their first lodging was at a modest hotel, Hotel Perrone close to the Christian Brothers and the Church at RAMLEH. • The Church must have been St Anthony's Church at Bacos. There was once a Christian Brothers‘ School near the church. • Mère Lucie, then superior in Jerusalem answered the call from Father Theodore in Paris and the Superior General, to come to Ramleh and assume the responsibility of the new foundation, while Sister Innocentia's call came from Father Mary in Jerusalem. 9. Beginning in Alexandria • This foundation in Ramle was encouraged by the Christian Brothers who knew our sisters in Constantinople, Chalcedon and Smyrna in Turkey. They also knew the need of another Congregation of sisters to open a girls' school in Alexandria. Up till then there were only the Sisters of Charity in Alexandria. • They succeeded in buying "The Bulkeley Hotel" building in Ramleh and on Saturday, May 8th 1880 they left the hotel Perrone and moved to their newly acquired house while Father Zephyrin returned to Jerusalem. • The first few small classes started in October 1880 . • In 1970/1971 the Notre Dame de Sion school was passed to the Congregation of the Egyptian Sisters of the Sacred Heart. 13. „In Sion firmata sum“ • To make tangible the hope that should animate us, we carry the name “Sion”. Mount Sion is a symbol of hope and being based on. Our motto “In Sion fimata sum” expresses the firmness of our faith in the fulfillment of God’s promise. Those who have trust in the Lord are as unshakable as the mountain of Sion. Hoping like Abraham against all hope, they triumph through persistence. This is an essentially biblical hope. It has the same foundation as the hope of the patriarchs and prophets. It’s based on the Word: “Belief in the word of God implies trust in his promises” • This kind of hope and persistence in times of no future is also meant by the arab word “sumud” which strengthens Palestinian Christians in their struggle for a sustainable peace: www.aeicenter.org/aei/sumud/index.htm Notre Dame de Sion

  14. „In Sion firmata sum“ • 1971 Sr. Ghislaine, Sr. Andreina, Sr. Alphonsie and Sr. Emanuelle left Notre Dame de Sion School in Alexandria and moved to Materia in a densely populated area of Cairo. • The Jesuits offered them a piece of Land on which the Kindergarden of Materia was build and become the place of the apostolic work. Across the street is the Caritas Center where health care, literally and sewing classes are given. Notre Dame de Sion

  15. „In Sion firmata sum“ • Sr. Emmanuelle began her project with the Zabalin people in Esbat el Nachel very close to the Materia area and at the weekends she would stay in the community in Materia. • In September 1975 Sr. Mirelle and Sr. Carina left Lebanon because of the war and came to Cairo. Another community was opened in a apartment building in the Daher district. It was called the community of Kobeissy as it was on Kobeissy street, a very central place near the train station where there are several churches and privat schools. • In 1976 all the sisters left Lebanon and so Sr. Mona, Sr. Stephanka joined us in Kobeissy, Sr. Beth and Sr. Darlene come from Canada to join us. And in 1980 we celebrated Sr. Emmanuelle's Golden Jubilee and Faizas first vows. Notre Dame de Sion

  16. „In Sion firmata sum“ • On Jan. 4th 1984 we moved into the new apartment which was build on the “De la Salle” school area. Here we are until now. The Kubeissy apartment become unsafe to live in and all the people had to move out. • Sr. Emmanuelle continued to live with us over the weekends. • After final vows and a year of study in Rome Sr. Faiza moved to Alexandria where she is until today. • Sr. Juliana come to Cairo 1992 studied Arabic as preparation to open a new community in Upper Egypt. • Because of close connection with the Minya diocese through the work of Sr. Darlene in the Seminary, Minya was chosen to implant our foundation.
