Climate Change • We have seen the historical changes to climate • Let’s look at the modern day changes to climate • Throughout the 20th century our global climate has been changing • Much of these changes are attributed to human activities • Anthropogenic (caused by humans) • Eg: Air pollution

  3. Global Temperature • The average global temperature has steadily been rising • Since the industrial age

  4. Effects of Global Warming • This warming trend has several effects • Melting of the polar ice caps • Longer summer at the poles • Rising sea levels • Increased frequency and severity of floods, hurricanes, and tornados • Extinction and endangerment of several species • Increased CO2 concentrations

  5. Polar Ice Caps • As global temperature rises, the sea and land ice at the poles melts • Less freezes in the winter • This leads to • Rising ocean levels • Decreased habitat for polar animals (ie: polar bears) • Increased warming of the planet (albedo effect)

  7. Rising Sea Levels • Rising sea levels can cause floods in low elevation places • The sea level has constantly been rising in recent years • Part of the rise in sea level is due to thermal expansion • As the planet warms, the water volume increases in the Oceans

  8. Carbon Dioxide • Increased temperature causes CO2 to be released from carbon sinks • Less CO2 stays dissolved in the oceans at higher temp. • CO2 trapped in ice and permafrost can be released when it melts • Since carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas, this sets up a positive feedback loop

  10. Carbon Dioxide Levels • In recent years, CO2 concentrations have risen to levels higher than ever before

  12. Anthropogenic Sources of GHG • Human activities have caused several greenhouse gases to increase in concentration

  13. Carbon Dioxide • Burning fossil fuels • Heating (natural gas) • Energy generation (incinerators, coal) • Transportation (gasoline) • Deforestation • Kills trees that can store carbon (photosynthesis) • Dead trees decompose

  14. Methane • Agriculture • Animal digestion (cows, pigs, chickens, etc...) • Landfills and Sewage • Decay of organic material in landfills and sewage • Mining • Releases methane from the ground • Released from all sorts of mines (coal, gasoline, etc...)
