Education Service What does CfE mean for my child? • Broad General Education (BGE) 3-15 • planned using CfE experiences and outcomes • Early level pre-school to P1 • first level P2 to P4 • second level P5 to P7 • third & fourth level S1 to S3 • Fewer experiences and outcomes within broader levels • Reduces clutter • Gives ‘space’ to broaden and deepen learning – so challenges and stretches all learners to develop a more secure understanding • Avoids superficial (short-term) learning and overly rapid (insecure) progress • Senior Phase S4-6 • planned using SQA and other qualification arrangements • Literacy, Numeracy and aspects of Health and Wellbeing now responsibility of all teachers • More active involvement in learning • Greater ownership and responsibility for all learners to contribute to planning, undertaking & evaluating their learning • More diverse approaches - including collaborative / cooperative learning

Education Service What does CfE mean for my child? • Systematic planning and learning of transferable skills: S1-6 • Skills for learning, life and work • Learning more meaningful, relevant and better set in context • Applying learning through interdisciplinary work and using partners from outwith the school • Profiling of progress and achievement • Eventually for all pupils at all stages • Immediately for all S3 pupils by end of 2012/13 • Assessment more 'valid' and 'reliable' • Assessment used for and as learning as well as a measure of learning • Better transitions • P7-S1 • Appointment in all Angus secondary schools of dedicated ‘transition teachers’ • positive progression from school • 16+ Learning Choices – Scottish Government initiative to identify and support all learners into a positive and sustained destination

Education Service Progress in 2010/11 • First full year of CfE • 3rd and 4th level CfE Experiences and Outcomes used to • plan learning in S1 broad general education • prepare new S2 broad general education for 2011/12 • Good progress with assessment and moderation - in line with national guidance • Use of ‘breadth, challenge and application’ to plan, carry out and moderate assessment • First reports to parents in CfE format • Developing, consolidating, secure • 22 schools piloting the systematic planning and development of transferable skills • Skills for learning, life and work • Increasing expertise in making learning ‘active’ • Progressive development of S1-3 and S4-6 Angus curriculum model for 2013/14

Education Service Next steps • All schools have three year plans for CfE (11/12 – 13/14) • In 2011/12, focus on: • Planning and tracking learning (OTwL) • Rolling out S2 broad general education • Developing S3 broad general education for (2012/13) • Continuing to develop confidence and expertise in assessment and moderation • Raising awareness of draft documents are released by SQA and offering feedback to help shape new national qualifications • Profiling learning (notably for S3 by 2012/13) • Continuing to support active learning (Co-op; MIE; FSIN) • Extending systematic planning of transferable skills across all schools • Increasing confidence and effectiveness in Literacy / Numeracy / Health and Wellbeing as responsibility of all • Finalising curriculum guidelines for 2013/14 and beyond • Informing and engaging parents

Education Service CfE curriculum structure in Angus2013/14 onward • Curriculum guidelines being drafted in partnership with schools • Guidelines balance consistency across schools with appropriate local flexibility within schools to: • Meet learning needs • Improve efficiency and allow for collaboration and partnership • Maintain and extend diversity of courses and learning opportunities • All learners sustain a Broad General Education to end of S3 • Learning across all curriculum areas and all/almost all subjects • Option choice for Senior Phase in S3 • Senior Phase S4-6 is a ‘single cohort’ • Classes organised by level of study not stage • Five choices at each stage in S4-6 ….. but …. • Local flexibility to offer six (in S4 only) through an early start to English and Maths part way through S3
