  3. A PhD in a broader scope • Mastering INDEPENDENT scientific research (work out your research and prepare your PhD) • Development of specific skills (b.v. communication & presentation, networking) • More in depth AND a wider scientific knowledge (seminars, workshops, meetings)

  4. => A LOT OF WORK & FRUSTRATIONS => DISCOVER YOUR STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES => PREPARE YOURSELF FOR YOUR FUTURE CAREER

  5. Efforts @ FBIW to achieve these goals • PhD symposium on Applied Biological sciences (17 October 2007; Faculty Club, Leuven) • Team building activities/information sessions (Quiz, sports, workshops) • PhD training program

  6. Visit the Arenberg library Guided tour, focussing on database searches, aimed at PhD students 20/2 @ 14.00 (dutch) 22/2 @ 14.00 (english) Watch your email for the announcement!

  10. Examination commission = Your promotor should submit a proposed examination commission to the doctoral commission. Propose examination commission at least 4 months before projected date of preliminary defence ! Complete your Doctoral training diary at this time (At least 1 week before the commission meeting; You may submit sooner! )

  11. Submit draft thesis = To ALL members of the examination commission (at least 4 weeks before prelim. defence) Set the date for preliminary defence!!! (dialogue with chairman and all members of the examination commission) Notify the secretary of the faculty of this date!!! (Katty Giddelo, DFA, LI, Kasteelpark Arenberg 20)

Preliminary defence • Requirements: • approved examination commission • (appointed by the rector; approved by the faculty) • All members of the examination commission should be present • (or must submit a written advice to the chairman in advance) • Student receives a written admittance for public defence • this admittance allows (obligatory!) enrolment for public defence at the student administration of the University (Naamsestraat 22, Leuven)

  13. Final manuscript • 4 weeks before before public defence : Electronic submission of dissertation/ announcement • 1 week before printing, request a ISBN number • (email to Goedele Jonckheere ) • at least 2 weeks before public defence: hand printed booklet to examination commission and secretary Don’t forget: - arrange your reception !!! - Professors’ gowns are your responsability - Book an auditorium for your public defence (by fac. Secretariat)

  14. Public defence • Choice of language is free • (take examination commission and public into account) • Scientific presentation of +/- 45 minutes • Questions bij examination commission
