Where is most of the Earth's oil located? • Top 10 producers •Barrels per Day • Saudi Arabia 10,782 • Russia 9,790 • United States 8,514 • Iran 4,174 • China 3,973 • Canada 3,350 • Mexico 3,186 • United Arab Emirates 3,046 • Kuwait 2,741 • Venezuela 2,643 3 4
Why is oil only found in sedimentary rocks? • Oil buried in sediment • -Sediment turns to sedimentary rock • Rock absorbs oil • Oil found in sedimentary rock 11 12
What is the best storage rock for oil? • Shale/best source rock • - Oil moved in to storage rock • Storage rock sedimentary 7
Experiment • Supplies • - Eyedropper • - Mineral oil • - 2 samples/sandstone • - 2 samples/limestone • - 2 samples/shale • - Magnifying glass • - Stopwatch w/ second hand • - Paper plates (6)
Experiment • Procedure • Place samples on plate • Drop 5 drops/mineral oil/sample • Start stopwatch • Stop stopwatch/when oil/soaked in • Record in data table
Hypothesis Hypothesis: If oil is poured on sandstone, limestone, and shale, then sandstone will absorb oil the quickest. 8 Why: Because sandstone feels the most porous.
Variable • Variable • -Type of rock • -Sandstone/Limestone/Shale 9 10
